Meet Peggy Fuller of By Design Interiors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Peggy Fuller.

Hi Peggy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
By Design Interiors is a full-service interior design firm headquartered in Houston, TX. Over the past 31 years, we have grown to become one of the leading interior design firms in Texas. Our talented designers specialize in the design, selections and layout of new constructions, custom home design, renovations, and home furnishings. We have a staff of 12 talented women, consisting of 6 lead designers and support staff who keep our office operating at its best.

As of Fall 2020, BDI expanded into the Austin areas with local interior designers who are helping spread our design reach further throughout Texas. By Design Interiors is unique. We value teamwork, creativity, and authenticity. Our six interior designers have the creative freedom to explore endless options for our clients, we can cater to a variety of design styles and clientele. Our turnkey approach to design guides you from the beginning of your project to the final reveal, we are by your side along the way to ensure each selection is perfect for your home and lifestyle. We have access to a wide variety of resources and vendors at our studio, showcasing furniture styles, a thousand plus fabric library and an entire room dedicated to new constructions and renovation hard surface and tile selections. It houses the product sampling to complete a project without having to leave our studio. It’s like a ‘one-stop shop’ for your home.

We love the team approach. We discovered early on that a team of experts in their field equals excellence. Our designers’ partner with the homeowner and their builder, contractor, and architects on both new construction and renovations. Our role is to support the homeowner! We emphasize a ‘client-centered design approach, respecting each client’s personal style, keeping in mind that they are all unique. Each project’s design process is focused on our client’s needs by being attentive to what they have to say and how they live, work, and play.

Our motto is: “Explore the Possible.” It is our vision for every project. As Interior Designer it is our responsibility to introduce our clients to new ideas and options for their homes. We create an environment personalized to them but are not afraid to push the envelope a bit. This helps our clients venture out to consider new ideas, concepts, and styles. It is an art of exploring the things they would have never thought of before.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business from the ground up is never easy. I had nothing but love for design and the need to provide for my family. Thus, I began By Design Interiors from my guest bedroom over 31 years ago. The design was all that I knew, however, starting a business was a whole different and unknown path. Business-wise, I invested time into learning all that I could about operating a business. I read every book and article I could find about starting your own business and marketing. It was a lot of long days, late nights, working weekends, and lots of prayers. I sought out advice and guidance from wise counselors and formed a network of trusted people to help build up my clientele. I am thankful to all those who guided me along the way.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about By Design Interior?
We currently have a staff of 12 hardworking and talented women. Six designers and six support staff who help keep our firm operating at our best. Our designers specialize in custom homes, new constructions, renovations and home furnishings. We value teamwork and collaborate with builders, contractors and architects on the design and execution of new constructions and renovations plans.

As of 2020, our team has expanded to Austin areas with a local interior design duo. They are working within Austin, San Marcos, and San Antonio areas. Our team is unique – we have six designers who have the creative freedom to fuller manage and operate their own projects. They have access to a vast amount of vendors, products and selections at our studio to help create a convenient ‘one-stop shop’ experience for the homeowner. We value each client’s style, needs and lifestyle – keeping that the center of the design. It is ultimately about them, making sure the final product is a home that embodies them perfectly.

Our mission is to ‘explore the possible’ for each home – keeping the design about the client yet gently presenting them with ideas that are unique, outside the box, or something they had not considered before. We feel our clients come to us for something different, not for something they already have or like. It’s our job to take their preferences and create a home that is unique, unexpected, but still true to ‘them.’

I am proud of the team I have grown at By Design Interiors. Each member is hardworking and trustworthy- making my job so much easier. I love coming into our studio and being surrounded by such creative and talented women. We are a family, each supporting each other, when one designer wins – we all do!

In fact, By Design Interiors was just named the Houston Chronicle’s 2021 ‘Best of the Best Interior Designer. Other exciting news is our senior designer, Ayca Stiffel, recently won 2 design awards: A Regional Luxe RED Award for her Willowcreek Contemporary Kitchen Design. A PaperCity Design Award for Full Residential Interior Design over 3500 sq. ft. for her Willowcreek Contemporary Custom Home.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
The design has always been in my DNA. Ever since I was a little girl, I would build apartment buildings from shoe boxes and use scraps of materials for window treatments and flooring. My father was a big inspiration for me to follow my creativity and pursue design.

One of my favorite quotes for inspiration is – “Faith is seeing the invisible and believing the unbelievable so that you might achieve the impossible.” – Charles R. Swindoll.

I find inspiration in Nature. It is beautiful – a new, fresh, and living thing that is ever-changing. It’s full of details, colors, patterns, and elements, much like a well-executed design. As well as antique stores. They are full of history and feels like a ‘treasure hunt’ as you go up and down the aisles. It inspires me with new ideas of ways to mix the new with the old.
