Meet Pernilla Turner of Classy Etiquette Institute

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pernilla Turner.

Pernilla, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am Pernilla Turner – Wife, Mother, Author, Consultant, Philanthropist and Teacher. I am the CEO of Classy Etiquette Institute and Virtuous Star, Inc., a 501(c) 3 non- profit organization for female youth ages 5-18. In 2006, I earned a Bachelors of Science in Administration of Justice with a minor in Journalism and in 2010 I received a Master’s Degree in Public Administration with a specialization in Human Resources.

I am a Dallas native and now Houstonian. I have been sharing my love for etiquette since the inception of my non -profit organization that I created in graduate school on the campus of Texas Southern University in 2010. With this organization, I have impacted the lives of people all over the country. My childhood experiences influenced my decision to move towards being the “light” that would spread etiquette knowledge to every generation! Since 2010 I have impacted the lives of more than 6,000 female youth through etiquette training.

Recognizing the joy that having great manners brings along with my deep desire to train and assist others in doing things correctly, I became a Nationally Certified Etiquette Consultant in 2014. I have always enjoyed teaching children, millennials, baby boomers, and other generations about topics that range from social graces to professional development. In 2015, I opened the doors of Classy Etiquette Institute in an effort to continue to assist children, college students, and professionals with the skills that will always be necessary to become successful.

Interviewing techniques, professional development, social graces, fine dining, holiday, social media, and wedding etiquette are just a few of the topics that I specialize in. I have been featured on CBS, and NBC media outlets offering professional etiquette advice. In addition, I have hosted workshops, one on one trainings, small group sessions, and program curriculum development for educational institutions. Learning etiquette is fun! It is my goal to share the blessing of learning proper etiquette through grace, style, and class combined with a Modern Mix of what is new and common in today’s social interactions and environments.

Has it been a smooth road?
Becoming a Nationally Certified Etiquette Consultant has been one of the best decisions of my life. I opened the doors of Classy Etiquette Institute in 2015.

However, the road to making my business as successful as I would like to has not always been easy. I have had to overcome many trials as I strived to spread the importance of having great manners. Social media is the fastest way to spread information so, I figured this would be a great place to begin offering tips on great manners as well as informing others of etiquette events that I could host. So, for the first two years, I strived to build my etiquette brand so that people could truly understand what is proper today and what isn’t.

I would post information for flyers and opportunities to attend my trainings on my social media platforms and there was excitement, but not much engagement. People were sometimes liking the posts, but not signing up and taking the next step. I wondered why was this happening. I learned that consistency is key. I know that not everyone is passionate about people having great manners, but everyone seems to understand how important manners are and will recognize when someone doesn’t have them.

After coming to this realization, I began to search for media outlets and other opportunities that could potentially assist me in teaching people in great numbers. Also, I rebranded and gave my business a unique look. This made me super excited! After making simple changes, engagement increased! I also looked for partnerships and opportunities that I had not set out for previously.

In 2017 I decided that it was time to package my gift into a few books. On April 28th I am launching The Modern Mix: Etiquette Today a book about the proper manners that are the key to unlocking opportunities while enhancing your professional, networking, and social abilities. Lastly, on May 19th I will launch Chloe’s Mini Manners, a children’s book to encourage great manners for small children at an early age.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Classy Etiquette Institute teaches classical etiquette with a modern mix. The fact that modern manners are intertwined with many classical teachings that we will forever use such as, please, thank you, and you are welcome makes what I offer unique.

I have trained children and adults in various fields of etiquette. Interviewing techniques, professional development, social graces, fine dining, holiday, social media, email, phone, hospital, gift buying, networking, and, wedding are just a few of the types of etiquette that I specialize in.

I enjoy working for Classy Etiquette because teaching great manners will never go out of style. Everyone remembers the principles that they were taught as a kid. I have the luxury and blessing of teaching children and adults a variety of tools that they will never forget no matter how old they are…

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
The need for etiquette is not geographically based, it is universal. Manners are important no matter where you are. I believe that the City of Houston offers a variety of opportunities to grow your business. This is the 4th largest city in the nation and is certainly a good place for Classy Etiquette Institute. If it is possible to make your business a success anywhere it is certainly possible in Houston.
