Today we’d like to introduce you to Sal Almohtaseb.
Sal, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
To be frank, I never imagined that I would be in the healthcare industry growing up, which is ironic, since my father and sister are very involved and established in the medical world. When I was young, I always knew I wanted to help society, but didn’t have a clue how I would be able to do that. I knew that I also wanted to be a business owner, as well. The thought of building something from the ground up was always something that motivated me throughout my entire life. As most people do, I tried many different fields to see what felt right for the future truly I envisioned for myself. Little did I know that the answer was right in front of me at home. My father is an audiologist, and he would always tell me how hearing can truly affect someone’s life. He encouraged me to join his company to become a licensed Hearing Instrument Specialist. I hesitated because I was looking at different options to start my own business. My perspective completely changed when hearing loss started affecting my father. It started slowly since hearing loss takes years to manifest, which is why most people do not realize how significant it becomes in one’s own life. As my father’s hearing diminished, I realized that communicating with him was becoming a strenuous task. That applied to both myself, and the rest of my family. I also realized that he became a bit detached. He refused to socialize with his friends.
The realization dawned on me that all this was due to his hearing loss, which thankfully, I was able to see since he had told me all about it. As any doctor will tell you, health care professionals are the worst patients possible. They are amazing at helping and diagnosing other people, yet they seem to never have the time to care for themselves. Finally, my father listened to his own advice and fit himself with hearing aids. This is when I got to see the benefit with my own eyes. People assume that hearing aids are just for hearing better when in truth, that is only the beginning. Communication is the most important factor in almost every aspect of a person’s life. Whether it be work, family, or any social events, why would a person want to participate if they cannot understand what is going on around them? Over time, any person will begin to isolate themselves, which can lead to many mental and health issues that can have an extremely negative effect on a person’s quality of life. I was lucky enough to have my outgoing, friendly, and socially active father back. That was when I realized the number of lives that could be changed in this line of work. The rest, as they say, is history.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As with everything meaningful in life, the road that brought me to where I am today was filled with difficulties and obstacles, but every single one of those hurdles has brought me to where I am today. The way I view it, an obstacle is only a hindrance until you have figured out how to get past it. At that point, it turns into an experience. One of the main struggles that I have realized is the fact that many companies promote hearing aids in a very sales-motivated technique. As a result, the consumers feel unsure of who to trust for the service they need. In this day and age, technology has made it so that information can be accessed at the tip of our fingerprints. This can be detrimental if you are unsure of what you are looking for. When looking at thousands of ads that all seem to portray the same thing, how is someone supposed to know exactly which brand or company would be the most suitable for them?
I decided to open my own clinic to provide the patients with the best service that meets their specific needs, By providing individualized information and patient evaluation, the decision-making process becomes much easier to understand, and experience. Also, we work with almost every major hearing aid manufacturer so that we can recommend the exact technology needed for that patient. We feel good knowing that whenever a patient comes in, whether they are going to use our services or not, that they will leave with a much better idea of what they need to receive the results they are looking for.
Please tell us about your business.
We opened Precision Hearing so that I can give specialized support and help in bringing sound and understanding as needed specifically to each patient. Our clinic ranges in services from complete audiometric testing, wax removal, and lifetime service options. We are extremely proud of the fact that we work with almost every hearing aid manufacturer to specifically fit every patient’s needs. This, along with our thirty-day free trial, lets the patient know that they can trust us to try our best to achieve the exact goals they are looking for. Our personalized approach to each patient will help us customize every step of a patient’s aural rehabilitation. We ensure that we have the patient familiarize themselves in all different aspects of their daily life to maximize the benefit from any devices needed. Most importantly, we try to educate everyone about the importance of hearing healthcare. Most people don’t realize that their hearing should be tested once a year, no matter your age or occupation. Spreading that information, along with our services, is something that we strive to do every single day.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We want to change the perception that hearing loss is an age-related issue that can not be comfortably taken care of. Also, to expand to try and help every single area in Houston. To constantly keep up with technology to guarantee that every patient has access to the best of the best. To be able to provide mobile hearing services to the patients, who are either bed-ridden or do not have access to transportation. In summary, we want to bring the benefit of the quality of sound to as many people as we can.
