Meet Heather Robertson and Amy Wessner of Pure Barre The Woodlands

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Robertson and Amy Wessner.

Heather and Amy have been best friends since fourth grade. They grew up together in Spring, Texas then attended Texas A&M together in College, Station, Texas.

Heather is a long-time fitness enthusiast who began playing soccer competitively at a very young age. Her soccer career ultimately led her to play Division 1 soccer for the Varsity Texas A&M College Station soccer team, where she also received her Bachelors of Business Administration and her Masters of Science in Accounting. Upon graduating from college, Heather worked for PriceWaterhouseCoopers, but quickly realized that fitness as well as helping others were her ultimate passions in life. After the birth of her two daughters, Cambelle and Ellington, she began teaching fitness classes at a local gym, quickly becoming certified in many formats, which then led her to become a certified personal trainer. Heather was more than grateful to be living the life she loved when she was one day approached to become a teacher for Pure Barre. Heather immediately fell in love with the Pure Barre technique, as she had never seen the results it gives in such a short period of time with minimal impact. She knew with her love of Pure Barre, her passion to help others live healthier lives through fitness, as well as her business education and experience, she had what it took to own and operate a Pure Barre franchise.

Amy grew up in Spring, Texas and began dancing at the age of three. She danced through high school and served as Co-Captain of the Klein Oak Strutters her senior year. Amy continued dancing in college at Texas A&M University where she was a member of the Texas Aggie Dance Team. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology with a Minor in Linguistics then continued her higher education at Baylor University. She graduated from Baylor with a Masters in Communication Sciences and Disorders as a Speech-Language Pathologist, and enjoyed a career of evaluating and treating Speech and Language disorders in San Diego, California, Corpus Christi, Texas, Anacortes, Washington and Aledo, Texas. Her husband, Steve, is currently serving his final tour as a Navy pilot in the D.C. area, where Amy has focused on being a stay-at-home mom with their daughter, Kinzey, and son, Gavin, while getting back into a healthy active lifestyle. In August 2016, during a visit back home to Texas, Amy went to see her best friend since 4th grade, Heather Robertson, at the Hughes Landing location of Pure Barre The Woodlands. During this first Pure Barre class, she fell in love with the technique and the high energy environment. As soon as she returned home to Virginia she searched for the nearest Pure Barre location and has been hooked ever since.

Heather and Amy, best friends for over 30 years, could not be prouder to co-own two beautiful Pure Barre studios in The Woodlands, Texas. Pure Barre has been such a blessing in their lives physically, mentally and emotionally, and they look forward to opening a third studio together in College Station, Texas summer 2018.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Pure Barre The Woodlands is very thankful for all of the love and support from The Woodlands community. Alden Bridge was the first Pure Barre The Woodlands location open followed by Hughes Landing. The two studios are collectively known as Pure Barre The Woodlands. Clients can attend either studio and instructors are able to teach at both locations. A challenge has been increasing the number of classes offered between the two studios due to increased demand as a result of the proven Pure Barre brand and technique. Alden Bridge classes are offered on the hour and Hughes Landing classes are held on the half hour. Between both locations, there are over 80 classes on the schedule to choose from. Heather and Amy are both moms so challenges occur daily due to balancing co-owner responsibilities with family life. Their schedules are full and so are their hearts. They wouldn’t have it any other way.

Please tell us about Pure Barre The Woodlands.
Pure Barre is the largest, most established barre franchise in the nation, with more than 460 studios throughout the U.S. and Canada, and more studios opening each month. Pure Barre is a total body workout that uses the ballet barre to perform small, isometric movements, which burn fat, sculpt muscles and create long, lean physiques.

Pure Barre was founded by dancer, choreographer, and fitness guru Carrie Rezabek Dorr. Carrie opened her first studio in the basement of an office building in Birmingham, MI, in 2001. With no initial clients, staff, signage or even a bathroom, the concept took off as clients were amazed by the results they saw from the workout.

In July of 2009, Pure Barre became a franchise and has exploded in popularity, due to its extremely effective technique (which transforms the shape of your body in record-breaking time); friendly, high-energy atmosphere; and fun, motivating music.

Pure Barre currently offers two classes, Pure Barre Classic and Pure Empower. Pure Barre Classic is a high intensity, low-impact, full-body workout that utilizes small, isometric movements to strengthen and lengthen your muscles. Pure Empower, launched August 2017, is a fast-paced, cardio-centric, total body workout. A blend of signature Pure Barre positions with dynamic strength training and interval training, this offering will elevate your heart rate and is the perfect counterpart to traditional classes. Heather and Amy recommend taking a mix of Empower and Pure Barre classes 3-5 times per week for optimal results.

Pure Barre is more than just a workout; it’s a lifestyle. At Pure Barre, women share a sense of community in which they are inspired and empowered by each other’s fitness and lifestyle goals. In addition to classes, Pure Barre also offers online workouts, equipment and exercise apparel.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Heather grew up a competitive soccer player and her childhood is full of great memories on the soccer field. Her favorite memory was of her team playing in the Norway Cup and seeing how big soccer was over there. Her team ultimately won the tournament that consisted of teams from all around the world. Their final game was on national television, they had the opportunity to meet the Prince of Norway and the huge cup they won had to ride in the cockpit of the airplane, with the pilots, as their team flew back home to America.

Amy’s favorite childhood memories are of her family traveling to Beaver Creek, Colorado for ski trips. She would look forward to the family ski trips all year long. Her family would ski all day only taking breaks for homemade clam chowder, gumbo or hot chocolate. Evenings on the mountain were filled with sleigh rides, dinner, hot tubs and lots of dancing.

I’ve been doing Pure Barre with these ladies for two years and it has totally changed my body and my life. I was 1 year post back surgery when I started and still dealing with a lot of sciatic nerve pain and back pain. Pure Barre has strengthened my core and made those issues practically non existent. The community of support at Pure Barre The Woodlands is incredible too. I can’t recommend it enough.
