Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachael Calhoun
Hi Rachael, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started when I graduated undergrad at the illustrious Alabama A&M University in 2017. Shortly after, I was offered an internship at a radio station in my hometown, Birmingham, Alabama. After six months of interning, I was offered part-time employment as a Promotions Assistant.
My time came to an end, and I wanted to pursue other opportunities in media. I launched a self based media outlet with a friend and it became a way of connecting with likeminded individuals.
Covid came in 2020, and throughout the pandemic I had a lot of time to spend exploring other endeavors. I decided I wanted to broaden my career by focusing on what digital media meant since everything was becoming digital. So I applied for grad schools and one stood out the most in Texas because of their school of communication!
That’s how Houston sparked an interest and the rest is history lol! I’m a 2x HBCU Alumna, filmmaker, stage manager, and Christ follower determined to spread the gospel through storytelling.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not! I don’t believe nothing in this life will be a smooth road. I believe challenges are presented in our lives to not only make us grow, but to make us learn from them. Sounds cliche, but it’s true!
Throughout my journey, I experienced close deaths, so grief. A full-on identity crisis because there were times I really didn’t know who I was, or what I wanted out of life. And of course financial hardships.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
When I graduated with my masters in Professional Communications and Digital Media from Texas Southern University, I was beyond proud of myself!
I became a filmmaker with two honorable mention awards for my self directed documentary on Discrimination in The African American Woman in the workplace.
I have connected with so many filmmakers along the way and have had numerous opportunities to assist with production on many different film sets.
With all that being said, what sets me apart is my ability to remain humble about what or who I work with. A lot of the time many people want to network up instead of side by side . I believe remaining humble and understanding that I don’t always have to be the one who needs help but willing to help others with their projects because my time will come! Gods will is better than mine.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in luck, I do believe in Gods grace and sovereignty over everything and over my life in general. Like I said, humility has opened way more doors than any man or employer could ever open.
