Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Eddins.
Rachel, please kick things off for us. Where does this story begin?
Eddins Counseling started out as a single therapist in 2005 (myself). I was involved in supervising and mentoring counselors interested in pursuing specialty areas and soon the practice expanded. Since then I’ve added a diverse range of experienced therapists in order to offer services to meet the needs of the entire family. We now have specialists in career counseling, anxiety, trauma and PTSD, child therapy, couples, marital and family counseling, teen counseling, eating disorders and emotional overeating, as well as women’s issues such as infertility, postpartum, and parenting. We also offer group therapy for learning emotional regulation skills through DBT, making peace with food, building self-esteem for adolescent girls and a self-care for mothers.
Has it been a smooth road?
Working as an entrepreneur isn’t always a smooth road. The main struggle has been lack of resources. I have previously worked in large organizations with entire departments available to provide the support I needed, whether it be marketing, IT or admin support. Building a business means you wear many of those hats yourself. There were also many years of working late hours to fulfill those roles, particularly as the business expanded before I had the resources in place to fill the gaps. Some decisions didn’t work out, money was lost and mistakes were made.
Hindsight is 20/20. In my field, there isn’t a template or formula or even best practices for building a business. The focus is on ongoing training and consultation to develop and maintain clinical skills, which is very important, but leaves you in the dark on how to run the business. I’ve learned most things the hard way through trial and error.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are proud that we are a team of specialists that can meet the needs of the entire family. If we can’t help the people who reach out to us, we’re happy to provide suitable referral resources throughout the community. We offer therapy for individuals, teens, children, families and couples. Our counselors specialize in areas such as trauma, anxiety and PTSD, DBT therapy and emotion regulation, relationships and couples, career counseling, eating disorders and emotional overeating, depression and major life transitions (grief, job loss, divorce, illness), and women’s issues such as coping with infertility, postpartum depression or parenting concerns.
We are most proud of our team. Each person is truly committed to making a difference in their client’s life. This work is a calling. We offer genuine care and concern and work to get to the root of issue vs. a surface solution. We believe everyone deserves to feel worthy, valuable, accepted, and loved and build those resources throughout the work that we do.
What sets us apart is our commitment to building a specialty area of skill and providing collaborative support to clients. Each person is a knowledge expert in their respective area. We engage in ongoing training and development to stay on top of our respective areas and regularly share that knowledge with our team. As collaborators, we consult with one another on a regular basis to ensure each client has the highest quality of care. We keep names and personal data confidential, but seek out additional perspectives to ensure we’re on track in our clinical work. It’s like getting multiple heads for the price of one.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Houston is an excellent place for a therapy practice or health care practice. Our city is diverse, bringing with it a variety of needs. I would definitely recommend Houston for someone just starting out. This is a city of opportunity.
