Meet Rachel Klein DeVault

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Klein DeVault.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Rachel. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
While taking college classes for an art degree, I would hang out with friends at several tattoo shops. After a while, I decided that this is what I wanted to do. I left school and acquired an apprenticeship with a well-known tattoo artist.

After graduating from the apprenticeship, I stayed on for a few years before leaving to work at other shops to gain more knowledge of different styles. I moved up to managing a couple of shops, then opened my own shop.

After three years, I sold that shop to move out of the Midwest to the sunny Texas coastline to grow in the industry and travel more!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it has been a constant struggle. Being a young deaf female in a male-dominated profession has been a constant uphill battle.

But it is one that I feel is worth it to do what I love. I am fluent in ASL and have amazing lip-reading abilities, so that helps with the communication.

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am in the business of art, and my medium is tattooing. I specialize in cover-ups, black & grey work, bold color, mandalas, Geometric but I’m especially known for my Watercolor tattoos. In other words, as a “watercolor specialist,” I also absolutely love tattooing back n grey!

I believe what sets me apart from others would be my passion for art with a solid moral and ethical foundation.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I believe everyone deserves some credit for my success from my mentor who took the time to teach me to the artist along the way who were patient with me asking questions to all my clients who trusted me and had faith in me to work together over the years. But biggest credit goes to my soul-mate Stephen who has been by my side from the beginning, through thick and thin.
