Meet Ramon Gamboa of Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ramon Gamboa.

Hi Ramon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Creativity has always resided within me, leading to several awards throughout my journey. Like many young individuals, I was filled with dreams and uncertainties. I believed in my talent but struggled under the weight of my aspirations and doubts. At the age of nine, I witnessed my father create his first piece of bird feathers on canvas. It captivated me, leaving an indelible mark on my memory. Despite our different artistic styles today, he imparted valuable wisdom that helped nurture my creativity.

My parents enrolled me in a modest workshop called “Coloring My Neighborhood,” where I flourished creatively, embracing my true self and growing more confident in my gift. This led to numerous national awards and earned me a beloved and respected status within my community.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One day, I was forced to leave my homeland for political reasons. I had to part with my childhood friends, the streets that witnessed my growth, and the neighbors who celebrated my television interviews. In that moment, my dreams of becoming a great artist seemed to shatter, and I was overwhelmed with frustration and fear, uncertain of my new reality. Yet, I refused to let my innovative spirit die.

I urge anyone who feels lost or unsure of their purpose to embark on a journey of self-discovery. Each person carries a unique gift or talent.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
One of my signature styles involves the incorporation of bird feathers into my canvases, creating a dynamic interplay between the two-dimensional and three-dimensional aspects of art. This distinctive method not only highlights the delicate beauty of feathers but also invites viewers to engage with the natural world in a new and profound way.

I take great pride in the positive impact my work has on those who resonate with it. It fills me with joy to hear my children refer to me as an artist, recognizing that I pursue my passion for creating pieces that embody universal morality and offer a glimmer of hope to those who feel disheartened.

While humanity often seeks to highlight differences among people and things—and that’s perfectly natural—it’s important to remember that, in the eyes of divine grace, we are all equal. Let the audience be the ones to differentiate between my identity and that of others. It would be unjust for me to claim superiority over anyone else, as we are all part of the same human race, despite our diverse perspectives and beliefs.

26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.

Luke 22:26-27

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
As an artist, I believe the most important quality contributing to my success is resilience. The creative journey is often filled with challenges, including self-doubt, criticism, and the unpredictability of inspiration. Resilience allows me to navigate these obstacles, learn from setbacks, and keep pushing forward, regardless of the circumstances. It fosters my ability to experiment with new ideas and techniques, continually evolve as an artist, and maintain my passion for creating art that resonates with others. Ultimately, resilience helps me stay committed to my vision and embrace the journey, no matter how winding it may be.
