Today we’d like to introduce you to John Shelton, Chuck Sweeney, Randy, Derek, and Schuyler Hames.
Edgewater Studios’ founder and CEO, Randy has been an award-winning major-market air personality on radio and TV for over 50 years. He has worked in Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Francisco and several other markets all over the country, and has won the prestigious Marconi Award for Major Market Air Personality of the Year from the National Association of Broadcasters and is one of the first inductees into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. His son, Derek, grew up around audio and video equipment, and became an accomplished musician at an early age. He met and became bandmates with John when both were students at TCU. These three business partners combined their audio, video, music and media savvy to found Edgewater Studios in Sugar Land – a multimedia company that provides high-quality music production, video productions and commercial voiceovers. Randy’s daughter, Schuyler was added to manage the graphic and web design arm of the business, and Chuck fills the role of general manager in charge of sales and marketing. Together, this team of professionals record full-length albums, EPs or singles for aspiring music artists, produces audio and video pieces for advertising agencies and creates graphics and builds websites for small businesses – plus several other music management and media services.
Has it been a smooth road?
Edgewater started small and built upon its early success by designing and constructing larger and more sophisticated technical space in Fort Bend County. Studios A & B in Sugar Land house music production, while Studio C is home to voiceovers and a design suite in Missouri City. The high quality of work Edgewater produces generated more demand, and the rapid growth created some early challenges, but the addition of Schuyler Hames as a graphic design artist with a keen eye, and Chuck Sweeney as a sales and marketing veteran helped to work out the kinks.

Edgewater has evolved and expanded over the years. It started as a simple recording studio, providing music and voiceover productions, but quickly saw a need for musicians, advertisers and small businesses to gain access to; the same high quality video and digital design services. Adding the capability to produce music videos, TV commercials and video content for social media and websites gave Edgewater the opportunity to meet their clients’ needs in a multitude of ways. Building beautiful, eye-catching, websites that went well beyond the cut-and-paste standard-issue platforms that can be self-built enabled Edgewater to offer an all-in-one service to clients as diverse as musicians and small businesses. For instance, a musician or band can record their album in Edgewater’s professional-grade sound studio, engage Edgewater to handle career management, employ Edgewater to build and maintain a sparkling website and even turn over social media management to the pros at Edgewater Studios. Similar packages can be constructed for both traditional and digital advertising agencies and small businesses.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What’s not to love about Houston? The weather is wonderful, except for about three months in the summer, but you don’t have to shovel humidity and heat is why we dig holes in our backyards and fill them with water. The people are friendly and the business climate is the best in the country. Everyone complains about Houston’s traffic, but Edgewater’s CEO has lived in several mega-cities and he will be the first to tell you traffic is bad in all of them.
