Today we’d like to introduce you to Rashada Abraham.
Rashada, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always had an innate reverence towards the importance of education from a young age. I formally launched my career as a professional educator teaching secondary students in Louisiana. After several years of teaching, my school leadership journey began at the age of 25 years old, and it continues today in Houston, Texas. After almost 10 years in public education, I’ve found purpose in guiding others through the process of meeting their educational goals and attaining professional advancement in the field of education.
With the God granted gifts of wisdom and leadership, I’ve worked in the capacity of advisor, mentor, and consultant for countless educators seeking to enter and/or advance their careers in the field of education with proven results. I am currently pursing my PhD student at Jackson State University in Mississippi where I am studying topics and issues concerning millennials in leadership, as they make-up the largest (and fastest growing) group of leaders in the world’s workforce.
My personal mission is to help educators launch into leadership for the future by providing the necessary training, encouragement, and support no matter where they are in the process. While leadership has become my passion, I am a teacher at my core. I’ve continued to serve children and families with individual consulting and educational services. In the wake of COVID-19, I’m offering facilitation for families in need of help for educating their children.
Has it been a smooth road?
As an African American female and a millennial, I’ve always felt like I’ve had “3 strikes” against me. Education is a field that is heavily saturated with veterans, so there have been times on this journey where I’ve been met with opposition where some educators felt like I was too young to lead them. However, I am a firm believer that “your gifts will make room for you”, and naturally once they begin to work with me, I’ve always been able to bridge the gaps between their first impressions and the reality of my skills as a leader in education. It’s unfortunate that anyone has to work hard to debunk stereotypes based on age, race, gender, etc., but when those glass ceilings are broken it paves the way for others like you to succeed. With that, even in the struggles, in the end those same people are generally able to acknowledge the skill and passion behind the young African America female.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with The MilLEADnial Educator – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My mission is to help educators launch into leadership for the future, by providing the necessary training, encouragement, and support no matter where they are in the process. I always say I want to help educators get from the test to the chair. What that means is, I want to help educators prepare for their certification exams and pass them. After that, I aim to support them in building their professional persona as they prepare to secure positions in education and educational leadership. In the wake of COVID-19, I’ve relaunched my individualized educational services to facilitate distance learning for families in the Houston area.
The best feeling is when my clients get positive feedback about their professional portfolios that we build and the ultimate compliment is when my clients get the job or gain program acceptance!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I just LOVE the city! I was born and raised in Louisiana, but I always knew I would move to Houston. The diversity of Houston is unmatched. Although I’m away from home, I am still close, and Texas has a similar home grown feel of solidarity that reminds me of the southern comfort of Louisiana. Houston is an hour from Houston, I am still getting used to the long commutes to practically everywhere!
