Meet Rebecca Fajardo of Makeup By BEXS in West

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Fajardo.

Rebecca, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Ever since I was a little kid, I was always coloring, painting or trying to find some artistic outlet. I remember there was one instance when I’d be at my friend’s house and we would sit for hours, cutting pictures out of magazines, and trying to create our own magazine. Then as the years went on, makeup started becoming a trend but I didn’t get into it until my junior year of high school. I never knew what I wanted to do career-wise and being a first-generation student made it a bit more complicated because I thought I had to follow the traditional, go to a good school, get a degree so you can get a good job, etc. But then I was introduced to entrepreneurship and everything changed. I knew I didn’t want to work a regular 9-5. I wanted to become my own boss.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a tough road but there’s always good and bad days. The toughest obstacle to overcome, in my opinion, is your mindset. Having your own business requires consistency and a strong work ethic, which is something I am still trying to learn. Building up my brand has also been a struggle for me personally, my makeup Instagram just recently reached 100 followers after almost a year of having it but it’s because I post every week if anything, which needs to change. I haven’t given up on it because I believe social media plays a huge role in building your brand, it allows people to have a peek into your work and what you’re passionate about.

Another struggle was not knowing where to start. The makeup industry has grown so much over the years and almost everyone is doing it now but my focus right now is not to be the best in the entire industry but in my city.

Please tell us about Makeup By BEXS.
I am a 20-year-old Latina Makeup Artist. In the summer/fall of 2019, I finally became certified and started my business, ‘Makeup by BEXS’. I chose the nickname ‘Bexs’ because while everyone knows me as ‘Becca’, I wanted something that stood out and sounded… different! I work in the Houston area and my hope is to become specialized in makeup for photoshoots, studios, films, theater, special effects and so on. While there are many other makeup artists in my city, my goal is to become the best at what I can do and make others feel beautiful in their own skin. I want to enhance their beauty, not cover it up.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is having someone look at themselves and immediately feel confident, feel as if they can conquer the world. Every time a client feels that way and they tell me, it makes me happy! Another thing would be the day I open up my own makeup studio!
