Today we’d like to introduce you to Relentless Training Facility.
We’re so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Yes of course! My husband (Scooter) and I share a passion for health and fitness. We have twin daughters who keep us on our toes with their respective sports and social lives so between our own careers and owning/running Relentless Training Facility-we stay busy!
Fitness has been part of our story since we met over 20 years ago. At the time, Scooter was working for a big box gym and continued on that path into our first year of marriage. He made a career change to the telecom industry and worked there for 10ish years through the birth of our twins. He has been in Oil & Gas at varying capacities for the last 10 years and continues to make advances in his career. Yes, that means he’s still in Oil & Gas and owns/runs the gym in his ‘spare’ time.
After struggling with postpartum depression, I utilized exercise as my outlet and ‘me time.’ You can read my whole story on my personal website but long story short, I began pursuing my Personal Training Certification. I eventually started training clients out of our garage make-shift gym.
As the years went on, I continually added certifications and specialties as my client base grew. I continued to scale my business with the hopes that one day, we could expand because he had always dreamed of owning his own gym. After years of working for a big box gym, he knew exactly how he would run things, the quality of customer care he would provide, and the community he wanted to create. He didn’t want members to feel like another number. While I was training clients, he handled all of the business strategies for Relentless Lifestyle, thus the continued growth.
Several years in, we took a leap and were about to sign a contract to begin building out our own public gym but Hurricane Harvey struck and the place flooded. God’s timing is everything! The gym got put on the back burner again.
Fast forward to the Summer of 2021, we were introduced to a couple who owned a warehouse-style gym very close to our home, from a long-time friend of ours. Scooter came on as a consultant to assist the owners with strategies on how to scale their group classes. As he began getting involved with the gym and getting to know members, his passion was re-ignited. A few months in and there were rumblings of the owners possibly selling the gym and our interests were peaked. In December those talks became reality and we jumped at the opportunity. We had both taken a personal interest in the gym and its members. We loved the family atmosphere, the no-frills environment and didn’t want to see it sold to someone who wouldn’t care, didn’t have a fitness background or would run it without a personal touch.
When we purchased the facility, we changed the name to Relentless Training Facility to make it our own. I don’t think many know why we chose this name but it comes from Psalm 46:5 (God is within her, she will not fail) which has been the mantra behind Relentless Lifestyle since day one. The gym is an extension of the business we built from the ground up out of our garage. We want it to feel like home for our members. We want everyone to feel welcome and make it a point to get to know everyone on a first-name basis. We are vested in their respective journeys and offer support however we can. We are there putting in the work day in and day out, from member relations to instructing classes to cleaning toilets.
We are proud to be one of the few Veteran owned and ran gyms in the area too. We proudly support our Military and First Responders by offering special discounts (and FREE memberships for our Combat Veterans). This is something the previous owner’s set up and with Scooter being an Army Veteran himself, it only made sense to continue to give back and show our support.
Unlike most commercial gyms, we don’t believe in contracts. We are open 24/7 for our members-yes, really. No extra fees, no enrollment, initiation, or first and last month stuff. You can expect a well ran, clean facility, excellent customer service and a welcoming environment!
We are so proud to have this space for our community and look forward to it’s continued growth!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Can you even say you’re a business owner if you haven’t struggled? Ha! Of course, there have been struggles but we look at them as learning opportunities and what not to do or how to improve next time.
Owning a brick and mortar business is a whole different ball game than running a business out of your home (or garage). No one tells you all the things, permits, licenses, fees, and inspections that are needed. We’ve been left to figure it out for ourselves….and we have but it’s been a rollercoaster! I joke that I’m going to create another business with checklists and packets for new business owners so they don’t have to spend the amount of time we have, navigating this!
Another challenge we’ve learned to handle is that we can’t make everyone happy and while it sucks, every decision we make is for the benefit and greater good of our gym.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Relentless Training Facility?
Our purpose with the gym is to give back to our community. We want our members to think of RTF as their home away from home. We didn’t buy this gym to retire on (trust me, you don’t get into this industry to get rich) which is why every bit of profit the gym earns, gets put right back into it so we can continue to improve and grow.
The gym also gives Bre another avenue to reach more people with her health/lifestyle coaching, which is truly her passion. 20+ years of our being in or around the fitness industry prove the need for coaching. While most people say things like ‘I just need a personal trainer’ or ‘I just need to get back in the gym’ that’s really not the case. Most people need help re-prioritizing their lifestyle. In our information-filled, instant-gratification society, we are overloaded which leads to paralysis for many people. There is so much misinformation out there and we’re all too busy to do anything with it anyway. Bre works mainly with exhausted women who have a hard time saying no or prioritizing ‘me time’ without guilt. She works to help them uncover what’s really holding them back (spoiler alert: it’s never the food or exercise) and helps them cultivate a way to live a healthier lifestyle without restrictions or deprivation.
Scooter loves helping people reach their health goals whether it designing workout plans, helping with macros, showing a member proper form on an exercise, helping with injury prevention and aftercare or mentoring new personal trainers.
Both of us know the value of prioritizing oneself but we know how hard that can be raising kids, owning multiple businesses and juggling all the things. We love helping people figure out a healthier way of doing things without judgment.
What sets us apart from others in the industry? For starters, we have THE best trainers who genuinely care about their clients. You are never treated as a ‘just another member’ at our gym. It’s normal to see trainers working together for the greater good of their clients. We all have different life experiences, years of training, certifications and specialties and we love seeing how everyone works together.
Our gym is well-ran and clean….which is apparently a big thing considering the feedback we get from new members leaving their old gyms for ours.
Everyone is respectful and it truly is a judgment-free zone. We have all walks of life, fitness levels and everything in between and everyone comments how ‘at home’ they feel here.
While the majority of other gyms charge enrollment and initiation fees and lock you into a contract, we don’t believe in any of that. Your membership bills the day you sign up and every month on that day thereafter until you cancel. If you’re traveling for work you also have the option to freeze your membership if needed. We’ve received some slack from other gym owners for not charging these fees but it just doesn’t feel right for us.
Additionally, we offer a completely free Bootcamp every Saturday at 9a AND Open Gym from 9a-11a. No strings attached, no limits. It’s our way of making fitness available to everyone.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
We didn’t own the business during the height of Covid but we can say without a doubt that our health is absolutely vital and we feel that Covid highlighted that for many. The majority of the population take their health for granted when it needs to be their top priority.
