Today we’d like to introduce you to Remiah Trask.
Remiah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I come from a long lineage of entrepreneurs. Both of my grandfathers, as well as my grandmother, were entrepreneurs. Consequently, my mom and dad are also entrepreneurs. Needless to say, I was basically destined for entrepreneurship.
I straight up slipped into the creative world on accident. A friend of mine needed a website built for his wife’s organization; since I had taken a few college courses that required me to build websites, I decided to give it a shot. Shortly after, my wife convinced me that I was pretty good and that maybe I could make a business out of it. I put together a $300 web design package and went out “door to door” selling and I closed two deals on the first day. I have not looked back since!!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road. Some of my struggles included not always being able to find good clients.
I’ve had issues with technology. Always having to find a better way to do something and technology is always changing, so it’s important to stay on top of current trends.
Growing a team is difficult because now you have other people who are depending you to feed their families. That’s a whole other level of responsibility.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Design Baton Rouge story. Tell us more about the business.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck has played a big role in my business. When I first started, I was using a Content Management System called Joomla. Joomla was ok, it got the job done, but there were much better systems out there that I just didn’t want to take the time to learn.
Well for one project, I accidentally purchased a WordPress Theme and couldn’t get my money back to exchange it for the Joomla Theme. This mistake forced me to learn WordPress, and now, 80% of the websites I build are in WordPress. It is the most powerful web design platform in the world.
I’d say that was a lucky mistake that connected me with the tool that changed my life and my business. Ever since my websites immediately got better, and my business increased.
