Today we’d like to introduce you to Rhonda Mclemore.
Rhonda, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was raised in a household with a total of 10 children. We were church kids that learned at an early age how to love God and singing would be our outlet. So we had a family group that was called the Jackson Family. Our parents took us all over the city of Houston to sing. It was amazing.
I later had an opportunity to travel the world. And sang on major platforms with major gospel artists such as Donnie McClurkin, John P Kee, Dr. Bobby Jones, and the list goes on. Those experiences shifted my life for the better. I was offered and opportunity to record with a great friend, the late Rosalind McDuffie. We started a group called Lyric. We were a Stellar nominated group. However, cancer didn’t win but God saw fit to call my partner in the ministry home. Life from there was a little uncertain but God allowed me to yet minister all over the world. Fast track… Pandemic hit… What’s to do now? I opened a boutique called Voss Fashions and we cater to most sizes. It’s been a joy watching women dress up in clothes that I sell. It’s also been a joy knowing that God won’t let you miss a beat even in a pandemic. I trust Him even the more. Life has thrown me around and I’ve picked myself up knowing that with God, there will be Nothing Missing, Nothing Broken, Nothing Lacking.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. On May 27, 1992, I experienced losing my 15 months old daughter in a car accident. Out of 8 people, five died. Later on 2005, I watched my mom pretty much burn up… She lived four days after that accident. I sang to her as she left us. A week after we buried our mom, my brother had a stroke and I took on the responsibility to take care of him. So I no longer could go out on the road to sing with Donnie Mcclurkin. My brother passed away seven years later. Listen, this journey has been hard but it built me for today.
Please tell us about Voss Fashions Boutique.
I’m the proud owner of Voss Fashions Boutique. I specialize in plus size women. I’m proud to say that the business is doing very well. I just need women to know you can be plus-size and still cute and classy.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wouldn’t have listened to people who said I couldn’t do a thing. I would probably be further along, but fear crippled me for a long time.
