Meet Ro Swain of Swaingirl Creative Tees

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ro Swain

Hi Ro, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In 2018 while looking for different streams of income I decided to craft and lean on the skills that I knew I was good at. At first I started taking pictures for people an charged a fee, but I noticed I was intrigued about pics with people that had cute, funny, real sayings on there shirts and decided I would love to do shirts. So I went out and brought a heat press, a vinyl cutter and some vinyl and gave it a shot. I was really good on the first try and I just started asking people in my family to let me make them a shirt. I fell in love with it and started learning more about placement and how to make a 1d picture look 3d, how to layer and work with glitter. Each day got better and better and now fine years later I am totally in love with my craft and how it brings endless smiles to people face when they see my work.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For the most part it’s been smooth sailing, however, like anything there are bumps in the road. No matter how good my quality is the Tshirt business is definitely a service that must be marketed. Often times I found myself discourage because I was sure how to get my brand or my product from my home office and on to a person. In other words, I had to now understand sales. I had to get my product sold and that would require engagement and networking which I was initially terrified to do. I conquered my fear by signing up for different events and. Endor opportunities around Houston. This forced me to talk about what I do, what I can offer, and how to obtain contacts. After about 3 events my nerves were calm and I was ready to Conquer the world selling and talking about my services.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
The least part of the city is the traffic. You always have to be two hours early to avoid being five minutes late.

I love Houston for its diversity, its rich culture, and the never ending life/excitement that the city brings to all areas. It does matter if you’re in Humble, Sugarland, 3rd ward, 5th ward, Mo City… Houston and its surrounding areas bring flavor and culture to the Houston entertainment scene. From the food, to the bars, lounges, parks, theaters and pop-ups, Houston is always vibrant and rich. It’s a lit place to be!
