Today we’d like to introduce you to Robel Yemane.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Robel. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
From an early age, I’ve had a strong enthusiasm for building and design, which led me to pursue my master’s degree in architecture. Following graduation in 2009, during the worst economic downturn and recession, finding a job in architecture proved difficult and thus changed my focus to low-voltage security design. As a security consultant, I collaborated with architecture firms to provide physical security designs for commercial projects.
Though I was employed full-time, I spent evening hours and weekends teaching as an adjunct professor at several local colleges to sharpen my software skills in architectural drafting. From time to time, friends and family members requested sketches and drawings from small projects to patent ideas. As a free-lancer, word spread quickly and demand grew. In 2011, RTY Drafting and Design Consulting was established, producing construction plans/drawings for architects, home builders/general contractors, and fabrication shops.
In 2017, following an assessment of the business, I decided to revamp our business model with the aim of providing a true one-stop shop, full design service by incorporating licensed architects and engineers. It was then that RTY Design Control Consulting was born.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road to establishing the business definitely had its ups and downs. Learning the market and the needs of the client has been a welcomed challenge as every project is different. We tailor each design to the individual/client and therefore we do not provide a cookie-cutter product. The company has expanded and subsequently endured growing pains. Our struggles have only made our team more resilient and experienced in both residential and commercial construction.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with RTY Design Control Consulting – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
RTY Design and Control is a full service project managing, architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural and civil engineering firm. What sets us apart from our competition is that we have an in-house project managing service. This mitigates loss of time and translation between the owner, project manager and design consultants. As the project manager, I provide clients/owners a single point of contact to communicate the requirements and details for the project. In return, I am responsible for documenting meeting minutes, evaluating project design, construction budget, and facilitating all communication between the owner/client and the architecture/engineering design team. As a project manager, the design team can strictly focus on implementing the project requirements into the building design. Also, the owner/client is relieved of the exorbitant amount time spent managing the flow of daily project correspondence and ensuring deliverable schedules are executed. RTY Design Control is most proud of having successfully completed all commercial and residential projects without errors or omissions.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The Houston metro area is what I enjoy most about living in Houston. Anyone with an entrepreneurial spirit and/or wants to work at some of the country’s largest companies would appreciate this city. Not only is Houston the hub of oil and gas, it’s also a major center for manufacturing and healthcare. Our medical center is the largest in the world with MD Anderson Cancer Center being the most recognized cancer facility amongst all. The housing market is affordable. Free and economical attractions are also readily available. Lastly, dining is an experience of its own from award-winning establishments like Underbelly to barbecue spots like Gatlin’s BBQ. Due to the diversity and ethnicities from all parts of the world, the metro area offers a variety of international cuisine ranging from Ethiopian to Vietnamese.
The least enjoyable aspect of Houston is the gridlock traffic we face daily, at all times of the day. This stems from the thousands of people who have moved to Houston due to jobs and opportunities and the vibrant social environment here in Houston.
