Meet Robert Garrett of RMG Electrical

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Garrett.

Robert, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My wife and I started the company from scratch 24 years ago with one customer, Coastal Hydraulic Cranes. I did all the work in the beginning as well as going to school and training nightly to become proficient in Auto Cad, electrical automation design, PLC (programmable logic controllers) and HMI (human machine interface) programming.

Today we serve over 25 local OEM in providing design, build and installation services.

We also provide general electrical service, repair and installation to over 100 commercial customers.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In the beginning it was very hard. I’m a little OCD and very particular about craftsmanship… It took 10 years before I could get comfortable allowing others to share the load… I was basically self-employed for those 1st 10 years. Once I brought a few good men on board that I could trust things got much easier. Corey Burgard has been with me over ten years now. Jason Odom has also been here over eight years. Allowing myself to trust them has made things move much easier.

Around 2013 we had approached nearly 2 million in gross annual sales with steady growth and my wife Linda and I traveled the world… Unfortunately, this extended 3 year oil bust has really affected us negatively resulting in a 50% drop in sales… We’ve hung tough and are starting to see signs of a return both with repeat customers and new clients. I’m seeing a potential strong 4th quarter and a much more robust 2018 for us!
