Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin McFarland.
Robin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was 18, I had a dream I was a Realtor and it scared me. It scared me because I knew it was a straight commission and I was accustomed to getting a paycheck and know exactly what I would be bringing home. In 2007 I had an opportunity to work in the apartment industry. I enjoyed meeting new people and assisting them in finding a place to call home. I purchase my first home as a single mother in June of 2011. After going through building my home and being able to pick out brick, tile, countertops, and cabinets. I fall in love with the new home buying process. In February of 2012, I was hired to work for a builder doing New Homes Sales. I was like a sponge and learned everything so fast that I was promoted to a senior community sales manager within two months. This promotion normally takes about 18 months, so to get it two months really set the bar. I had to deal with co-workers that felt I didn’t deserve the promotion. I learned so much from working with the builder. I had the chance to work with all kinds of buyers but my favorite buyers were the first-time home buyer. I loved educating them throughout the home buying process. I found myself wanting to help more people become homeowners. Working for a builder I was confined to only selling in my community. I decided to become a Realtor in 2015 to be able to help friends and family buy or sell their homes. When I became a Realtor, I had no limit on where I can sell real estate because as long as it’s in Texas, I can get it SOLD.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, the journey wasn’t smooth. You really got to put in the work before you start seeing anything. I think the struggle for me was I had this idea of how things would go. I had this whole vision but everything wasn’t working according to that vision. Being a single mother and trying to balance it all was definitely a challenge, that I’m still managing to work through.
Real Estate Agent – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
What I do is assist buyers, sellers, inventors, and renters with making the right decision. I’m known for working with first time home buyers and helping them make one of the biggest purchases of their life. I educated them on new construction and resale. I find out what’s important to them in a home and I work hard to help them find the perfect match. I do get buyers from time to time that are a little more hands-on when finding a home and I’m open to them as well. I’m proud most when I work with buyers who never thought they can own a home. They never grow up in a home themselves but were able to do that for their family. Moments like that really warms my heart and makes me love what I do even more.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Growing up we moved a lot. I hated it because I would always have to leave my friends and make new ones. It allowed me to live in so many places around Houston and surrounding areas. I went to a few elementary schools, two middle schools (Welch Middles School & Hoffman Middle School), and three High School (Eisenhower High school, Elsik High School, and Fort Bend Austin High School). I would ask my mom why we keep moving and she would say “because our lease-up” or “she wants the sell”. You never know how your childhood would make sense when you’re older. Going to all those schools and meeting all the people I have met as helped me tremendously in my business. I have been able to assist classmates and friends to become homeowners. I know so many people and I know my way around Houston and the surrounding areas.
