Today we’d like to introduce you to Robyn Graham
Hi Robyn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began my career in cosmetology, graduating at the top of my class with honors and earning scholarships to pursue advanced studies at PBA. In 1986, I completed Advanced Master Classes, including the Graduate advanced Division with the Redken Scientific School program, presented by PBA, along with a Master Aesthetic Skin Care course encompassing the Theory of Electrolysis. My studies included a rigorous internship at PBA, which included completing business classes at Point Park, building a solid foundation in both the creative and business aspects of cosmetology.
Driven by a passion for academic growth and a desire to deepen my expertise in Electrolysis, I returned to PBA’s Institute of Electrology to pursue specialized training. I graduated with high academic honors, fully equipped to transition from a broader cosmetology focus to a dedicated practice in Electrolysis and the science of hair follicle biology.
After years of owning and managing a salon and spa, I decided to concentrate exclusively on Electrolysis, recognizing the importance of educating clients on the differences between Electrolysis and Laser hair removal. As the only FDA-recognized method for permanent hair removal, Electrolysis offers a unique solution, which I’m committed to helping clients understand. I take pride in guiding my clients through a range of hair removal options, empowering them to choose the method that best suits their individual needs. For those who opt for Electrolysis, I am here to provide expert care with integrity and compassion.
Reflecting on my journey, I’m reminded of the saying, “It takes a village.” I’ve been fortunate to have a network of key individuals who helped me rise above the everyday challenges we all face. This support group has been like winning the lottery in the most meaningful way. My colleagues at Elaris Med Spa, along with my membership with the American Electrolysis Association (AEA)—the largest international organization for Electrologist Professionals—have been essential. The dedicated AEA Board Members and Delegates have been especially pivotal, offering encouragement and guidance, particularly during my journey of raising four children practically on my own for a very long time.
These incredible people, who volunteer countless hours, lifted me up repeatedly with positive energy, motivating me to pursue my goal of becoming the best electrologist I can be. Their unwavering support for 25 years has been instrumental in my personal and professional growth.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like many, I found that the COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges. In that period of uncertainty, I even considered early retirement, especially as I faced a tendon injury that impacted my work. Relocating to Texas from Pennsylvania to start fresh and build a new storefront was no easy task, requiring significant effort to rebuild a client base and manage startup costs. The possibility of losing all that hard work to circumstances beyond my control was heartbreaking. Yet, life is rarely a smooth ride, and it’s often the bumps along the way that teach us the most.
Throughout my career journey, I’ve encountered challenges that stretched me both personally and professionally. From caring for my sister after a severe head injury to welcoming twins along side of my two other babies and starting over in a new state, each challenge tested my resilience. How we respond to life’s challenges often determines our path forward, and I have always aimed to choose positivity. Although not always easy, these experiences have strengthened me, building resilience, self-worth, and confidence—qualities that are truly invaluable.
Success is measured differently by everyone, and for me, it’s rooted in faith, openness to opportunity, and gratitude for the incredible support of my family and clients. I am fortunate to have been surrounded by family, friends, colleagues, clients and patients who bring positivity into my life, making each day meaningful and contributing to my life journey in ways I’ll always appreciate.
We’ve been impressed with Houston Electrolysis Center , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As a licensed, board-certified electrologist, I’m often reminded that many people don’t fully understand what Electrology entails. Frequently, Electrolysis is confused with Laser Hair removal, though they serve different purposes. Electrolysis is the only FDA-recognized method for permanent hair removal, destroying the hair follicle to prevent future growth, whereas Laser is a hair reduction method. Both options have their place in cosmetic hair removal, and I always encourage clients to make informed decisions based on their unique goals, whether for permanent removal or reduction. In surgical cases where permanent hair removal is required for skin grafts or specific treatment areas, Electrolysis is often the medical choice, performed in alignment with doctors’ instructions.
Electrolysis has been practiced for over a century, initially developed to address painful ingrown, inverted eyelashes. Despite this long medical history, standards for electrologists vary by state; some states lack licensing requirements. I advocate for clients to be their own advocates, seeking out qualified professionals with comprehensive training and credentials, as these professionals commit to continued education and up-to-date practices. My training included both theory and clinical hours through an advanced academic & internship training with PBA Institute Of Electrology & with Zap Master Electrology. With the correct credentials of academic and clinical hours, I’ve also achieved my CPE Certification through the AEA passing an exam sponsored by the International Board of Electrologist, an experience that connected me with influential figures in the Electrology field. I hold a current Electrology & Laser Practitioner License with Florida’s State Medical Health Board. Prior exams to the Florida State Board IBEC exam were ~ the CME exam* Certified Medical Electrologist (SCMHR), the CCM exam* Certified Clinical Electrologist(SCMHR), the CLHRP* Clinical Laser Practitioner(SCMHR) and Laser HR Professional (Avante Laser Training) exam through Texas Department & Regulation.
The clinical hours I gained introduced me to a rich variety of clients, each sharing unique perspectives, stories, and experiences. Electrolysis often involves multiple sessions, so clients and I spend valuable time together, building trust. One client—a physician—once called me her “medical bartender,” which underscored the deep, personal nature of my work. A true compliment. Through these interactions, I’ve learned that the most meaningful lessons often happen beyond the classroom, a sentiment that has enriched my career profoundly. I feel fortunate to have been influenced by clients, colleagues, and mentors alike; their impact on my journey is invaluable.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Whether through good luck or bad, I believe the universe aligns things as they’re meant to be, and eventually, the stars connect. Life’s journey isn’t something we’re meant to fully understand in advance. Often, opportunities arise at the most challenging moments, reminding us that when one door closes, another is ready to open.
