Meet Ron Tingook, Cheryl Love-Hanks and Julian Riley of Houston Baha’i Center in Midtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ron Tingook, Cheryl Love-Hanks and Julian Riley.

Founded a little more than a century and a half ago, the Bahá’í Faith is today among the fastest-growing of the world’s religions. With more than five million followers, who reside in virtually every nation on earth, it is the second-most widespread faith, surpassing every religion but Christianity in its geographic reach. There has been an active Baha’i community for over 75 years in Houston, which today numbers in the 100’s of followers from diverse ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Baha’i are actively working to unite humanity. Bringing people together and creating social spaces where diversity can be celebrated has been a challenge; however, in learning to have heightened conversations about the oneness of humanity and the role of religion in uniting humanity Baha’is are creating a vibrant community where all feel welcomed.

Please tell us about Houston Baha’i Center.
Bahá’u’lláh, the founder of the Bahá’í Faith, stated that Religion is “the chief instrument for the establishment of order in the world and of tranquility amongst its peoples.” He also asks: “…is not the object of every Revelation to effect a transformation in the whole character of mankind, a transformation that shall manifest itself, both outwardly and inwardly, that shall affect both its inner life and external conditions?”

The principle of the oneness of humankind is “the pivot round which all the teachings of Baha’u’llah revolve”.

What are your plans for the future? What are you looking forward to or planning for – any big changes?Baha’is are working to become active participants in meaningful social change at the local level, and thus are still learning how to strengthen bonds of trust and friendship in communities and neighborhoods and finding acts of service that all can both be involved in and benefit from in their local communities.
