Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosie Diaz.
Rosie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The way Red Ink Boutique came about was completely random. One day I turned to my husband and said “I’m going to quit my job and sell jewelry!” He was totally surprised because I knew absolutely nothing about jewelry. I started out by setting up a pop-up boutique at festivals and craft shows, then later opening a pop-up boutique in a U-Haul Storage Unit (I know-crazy!). Every Tuesday and Thursday I allowed my client base to shop from the U-Haul, and on the weekends I continued to set-up shop at festivals and craft shows. A year later, in 2003, I decided to lease a storefront on Sawdust Road in The Woodlands. We have been blessed with 14 years of business thus far. We currently have our storefront in the Woodlands, and recently created our website, www.redinkboutique.com. I always get asked on how the name Red Ink came about. Red is my initials and Ink is a play on the abbreviation for incorporated. The name is fitting with our philosophy, because we aim at bringing the latest and trendiest clothing without charging typical boutique prices. The red ink on our reasonably priced pieces represent that the item is on sale. My and my daughters are the buyers for Red Ink. One of my daughters is a professional make-up artist and has a very spunky, bold, city-like style. My other daughter is a law student who has a pseudo-conservative, cute & southern style. Me, on the other hand, I am in between and enjoy finding merchandise that is trendy but that I would feel comfortable wearing at my age. With all styles joined, we are able to cater to trendy women of all ages who are looking for boutique clothing and accessories and want to get the most bang out of their buck. Shopping at Red Ink allows us to cater to personal needs. Some ladies need a large quantity of one item for a company events or bridal parties, some need just one specific item for one specific event; if we do not have it in store or online, I will personally find it for them, and at the lowest price possible!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Over the last 14 years, we have moved three times-all on Sawdust Road. Our customers are the best and have always found us. We are happy with our current location and plan on staying here.
Red Ink Boutique – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Red Ink Boutique specializes in putting our customers first. There are so many places to shop here in The Woodlands, such as the mall or outside retail chains; however, you risk paying high prices, having the same piece of clothing as many other women, and you don’t get the customer service as you would get shopping at a boutique. At Red Ink Boutique, we are known for being there for our customers. Some women are super busy and will call and say “Can you please put a couple of outfits to the side for me? I can pick them up after work”. They know that we pay attention to their individual styles and that’s what sets us apart from other clothing retailers. Some of our customers have become our friends. We shop for them; we pray for them. It’s important that we go above and beyond for them, not because we are obligated to, but because that’s why we do what we do.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I don’t have just one proud moment; I have many. Helping women look and feel their best not only makes me proud every single day, but it’s what makes it all worthwhile.
