Meet Ross Barber of Urban Rebels Productions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ross Barber.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I suppose my journey started as kid when my parents would always take us to the movies and after every movie my father would ask me what I thought about the movie and what grade I would give it.

Fast forward to high school where I was apart of both media production programs at Dobie high school with Dobie news and when I moved my Jr year to Pear land taking media production classes for Oiler vision. Which is where I got my first real taste of the media production industry. While attending San Jac south, I took one elective class called “movies 101”. There is when I was introduced to the behind the scenes of film. The history of film. How movies were made and how almost everything that you see on camera is meant to be from the yellow jacket that Bruce Willis was wearing in unbreakable to understanding what certain shots were used in some genres compared to others.

But even then, I wasn’t sold on being in the world of media. But in 2014 is when I decided to use my tax refund money and invest in my first camera and taught myself with the help of the University of YouTube on how to shoot photography and videos while learning the rule of thirds. I later graduated to shooting music videos for friends and local artist and when I eventually learned that I can make money off of my hobby at the time is when I chose to Create Urban Rebels Productions. Though I was able to shoot and had an eye for the camera I still had to export my videos to others because I did not know how to edit so after many years of attending different schools for different majors like Marine biology and being a Psych minor and wanting to major in advertisement and communication. I was at a standstill at life after leaving my job at the airport due to back issues I finally decided to give The Art Institute of Houston a shot.

From the moment I walked into that building I knew I was in the right place. The whole environment and atmosphere was exactly what I needed. While attending A.I.H, I was able to work on my first feature film as part of the casting director’s team to working and picking the brain of Miss Michel Mower. An opportunity that leads to me working on sets for HEB commercials to ABC TV shows to TLC and Fox movies.

I took the knowledge and experiences I’ve learned on those sets as well as sets I’ve acted and model on and brought it to my own. During my time at the art institute, I have acted in three short films, Directed nine short films along with being the screenwriter and producer on 4 of the nine projects. “The Golden Parrot” and “Quiet Storm”, and the other two “Sacrifice” in 2017 and “To Catch A Killer” that was a finalist for the competition in 2018. Both were submitted a five-hour short film competition I have also worked with the city of Houston being commission projects one of which being a 411 P.S.A for the city of Houston.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I believe on the road to success there is never a smooth road. There will always be bumps and bruises along the way. A few of the struggles I’ve had first and foremost time and then was finical. Being a film major is not only time consuming but it also takes a lot of your funds as well. As far as time goes, I have sacrificed jobs relationships and friends for the ability to focus and hone in on perfecting my craft. With sacrificing working because of the long hours of school and shooting schedules for the most part was unable until to get a steady job until very recently.

Trying to shoot a production and getting equipment or things for set design and wardrobe is a hassles when you are balling on a budget. A budget that barely exist so I had to scratch and claw and save every penny, Nickle, and dime to try and bring the set to life.

If I had to start over, I don’t think I would have done anything different because everything I have done has brought me to where I am today and made me the director, producer and man I am today. I believe that all the wrong or things I could have done better were all lessons that needed to be taught to me at the time I learned them.
