Today we’d like to introduce you to Roy Mathis.
Roy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started out as a writer of poems and short stories and my God-brother who I can say introduced me to all genres of music told me we starting a rap group. I was at first like let’s do it but then came to the realization I didn’t know how to rap, he then taught me how to write bars (format of writing lyrics) and I quickly mastered it. We formed a rap duo Eyez of Texas in which we reached out to a friend J2tha who produced beats and we began making music. After years of doing the group thing my brother/friend went on to doing other things and I was still rapping as solo artist and that’s when Redimade came about a name giving to me by a friend because as he says I’m Made for the game and Redi for it, I over the years kept doing underground releases and demos which lead to my first release professionally in 2015 Made Man under me and J2tha label we have together Medicinal Music Group. It did well as far as getting me noticed as a real lyricist and solidifying me in the hip hop scene locally.
I took a nationwide leap in the game after appearing on Shade45 Sway in the morning show Freestyle Friday in 2016 that’s when things started getting interesting, I’ve since then released RollsRoyceRedi and RollsRoyceRedi Cullinan a mixtape series I started as a dedication to my mom who was my biggest fan. I recently appeared in XXL Artist to Watch section and worked with various local legends such as Lil KeKe Chris Ward Big Pokey and a host of up and coming artists. I’m definitely here to stay and won’t stop until the world know Redimade and I’m a household name.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has been rough the fact that when you are independent you have the struggles of dealing with the music politics and pressures of giving up when you feel the music is there but nobody is listening and also the financial obstacles of putting a lot of money in but nothing coming back it gets frustrating but it also makes you keep pushing harder.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Redimade – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Redimade is not just me as an artist it’s a brand I’m a master at making quality music and what sets me apart from other artist is the fact that I love what I do I studied the art and mastered it.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I plan on promoting my newest release The Cullinan and working on my new EP 10,000 hour Theory. The biggest change is me mentally not letting negativity or anything block my focus.
