Today we’d like to introduce you to Roy Walters and Sharon Nash-Walters.
Roy and Sharon, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My wife Sharon, and I started this family-oriented gun range about three years ago. A lot has happened since our inception. We started the range because it seemed that there weren’t enough gun ranges for all the shooters. Anywhere we went there was waiting lines, or waiting lists for memberships.
We were blessed enough to find a great location on a major freeway and the demographics are such that we are positioned in an area of tremendous growth….new subdivisions, new businesses and more entertainment. Our range is a God-centered facility. Having said that we do not stand at the door and bang people over the head with a bible. We just try to, on a daily basis, present an example of Christian principles in our business dealings. All races and religions are welcome but we are who we are and unabashedly proud of that fact.
As a matter of fact, we have a very ethnically diverse customer base which is reflection of Fort Bend County which is the most ethnically diverse county in the U.S. People seem to appreciate how we conduct our business. If you look on our Facebook page at reviews we have earned a 4.8 out of a possible 5 with over 200 reviews. We are very proud of this.
Our objective is to make sure everyone has a very pleasant experience when they come. We are intent upon giving our customers a great experience for the money they spend here. Just to dig a little deeper we do not consider ourselves just a gun range…. we are a safe facility where men can bring there wives and children and not fear for their safety. They also need not be concerned with foul language or inappropriate behavior at this gun range.
Has it been a smooth road?
I don’t think any business has a smooth road…. there are always challenges and many times they come totally unexpected. The great thing about a small business is that it can typically react very quickly to changing circumstances. Some of those challenges has been choosing the right media to reach the public. If you have a great product but can’t reach the public then you are dead in the water. Finding and keeping great staff is also a challenge but, at this time, I think I can say that we have the best crew we have ever had.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the G2G Family Shooting & Archery story. Tell us more about the business.
Aside from being a gun range where people can shoot we are a great training facility. We provide the following:
1. License to Carry Classes. We probably offer more per month than any gun range in the greater Houston area…. typically more than 10 per month. This class is required by the State of Texas in order to conceal carry or open carry a handgun. We are especially proud of our instructors for these classes.
2. We offer a Home Defense Shoot House class. It is a 2 1/2 hour class which helps prepare people in the event they are the victims of a home invasion crime. One hour is spent in classroom and the other 90 minutes is spent running different scenarios in our indoor, air-conditioned shoot house. Shoot houses are simulated homes, basic in nature, furnished much like a real house and is an area where, in our case, civilians can train. To our knowledge, this is one thing that makes us very unique from other ranges in the Houston area. The class is totally non-lethal in that we use only airsoft guns and ammo and we provide all equipment.
3. In January of 2018, we will be rolling out our newest offering for the public. It is an outside Airsoft competition field. This sport is much like paintball but instead of paintball, we use airsoft guns and rifles. Air soft is a small plastic round pellet and is non-lethal. The area where people will compete will be on the model of an old western town with about 25 to 30 structures, including the town bank, saloon, general store, Boot Hill and many others. This continues the vision of our business providing family-oriented services. Again, no other gun range in the greater Houston has such a course. We feel like the demand will be unbelievable.
4. We provide two competitive shooting clubs for our customers…. one is a basic club for those who have experience shooting but have not ever shot competitively. This allows individuals to jump in the “shallow water” before jumping in the deep end of the pool. As people in this club become more proficient and knowledgeable about competitive shooting then they are free to self-graduate into our advanced competitive shooting club. In both of these groups, the shooters will be in front of the shooting boxes, many times moving and shooting. People have so much fun at this that they usually become somewhat addicted to all the action.
5. We also customize events for churches and corporations and do a lot of team building events.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The market is going to do nothing but grow. Women are the fastest growing segment of the shooting sports and are very important to us as a market. We as a range are always looking for more and unusual services to offer to our customers.
