Meet Rudy Hernandez of Brew Chew Treats in Pasadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rudy Hernandez.

Rudy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been in the service/alcohol industry for about ten years now. I’ve done everything from back of house to serving, security, bar back and bartender. I love beer and everything about beer. I co-founded a draught beer equipment service and installation company in 2015. TrueTap Dispense Specialists. This led me to fully immerse myself in the beer world, brewing beer as a hobby in my home and volunteering at Galveston Bay Brewing in Dickinson. The Brewmaster is one of my good friends, Skyler Forshage, he was kind enough to take us under his wing and show us the process of making beer in a professional setting. BrewChew was born out of the desire to further engrain myself in the Texas beer community and help recycle a material that has much more to give. Working with dogs is an amazing benefit, we meet 100’s of dogs every month. My wife Rachel and I are both dog lovers. We have two happy rescue pups named Mishka and Fawkes and we plan to keep growing our pack. We’ve realized that our future lies in working with dogs and beer and so we’re doing whatever it takes to accomplish that.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I turn 31 in February and looking back to everything that has happened in the last five years. I can happily say that it’s been such a dynamic situation. I’ve learned quite a lot about my potential and my weaknesses. I didn’t really know what I was doing with my life in my early 20’s. I had a lot of growing up to do and now, it feels good to have a direction I can drive in everyday. My struggles have been pretty common I’d think and certainly far easier than quite a lot of other people. I’ve been accused of being an idealist and Its certainly bitten me on the ass recently. With inexperience comes problems and with problems come disagreements. Figuring out the best way to proceed with launching a product for sale, including manufacturing, packaging and sales is a daunting task. But beyond all of the problems…I wouldn’t be able to do any of this with out the support and sacrifices my incredible parents have made for our family. My amazing wife Rachel of course and some amazing friends.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Brew Chew Treats – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We are BrewChew, the grain dogs love. We are on a mission to combat brewery and food waste. By feeding our favorite four-legged friends, healthy all-natural treats. Our treats are naturally preserved, they are baked and dehydrated to lock in flavor in a healthy and safe way. We partner up with some Houston area breweries. Galveston Bay Brewing in Dickinson and True Anomaly Brewing in EADO. We take some of their spent grain, being careful to avoid any recipes that use any wheat. We take the material (barley, oats, rye) which has been sitting in near boiling water for about an hour. We dry it out in order to turn it into a healthy flour. We pride ourselves in using drying techniques which make use of free energy sources. Like the searing texas sun, to sun dry the grain. Keeping in mind our ecologic impact with using fossil fuels. Our goal is to be 100% solar-powered eventually. We try to source our raw ingredients in ways that help reduce food waste. Like using ripe (not rotten) fruit that while perfectly edible, is cosmetically unappealing to shoppers.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are looking forward to adding new sizes and flavors short term. A big part of what we do is helping people love animals, we actively work with the Pasadena Animal Shelter to sponsor adoption events and make a small monthly donation of treats so they can spoil the dogs for at least a little bit of extra food. Rachel and I eventually hope to open an overflow shelter to service the Pasadena, Deer Park and LaPorte areas.
