Today we’d like to introduce you to Russell Guess.
Russell, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m a music producer in the field since ’99. Music has been around my whole life from my parent’s record collection to playing sax in the band all through middle & high school, to dancing in a hip-hop/house group called Akshen Figgaz. My start in production is actually a funny one. I was watching the episode of the Cosby Show where Denise hit Stevie Wonder’s limo with her car.
After watching the engineer work with Stevie, I decided I wanted to be a recording engineer. I didn’t think me as a music maker was realistic, so I thought settling for working with the greats would suffice. I went to school for Audio Engineering, and from my piano & MIDI classes, I realized how much I liked to create. I never looked back and have been producing ever since.
Has it been a smooth road?
Being that Houston has no infrastructure as for as the music business goes, finding consistency and getting exposed to new markets is hard if you don’t leave.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Reset Ventures – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Reset Ventures is a company I started about 5 years ago. It’s basically the hub that I release all my solo projects on. I also work in a production group called Analogue Escape. We’ve had our studio in the famed SugarHill Studios. As a producer, I specialize in composition, arrangement, programming, and recording.
I’d like to say I see the things other people don’t. I’m really good with melodies, and ‘weirdness that works’. I’m always aiming for a fresh new approach. I’m most proud that I’ve been able to get the great to greatness… I’m at my best when I help others achieve their dreams. The thing that sets me apart is that I pay attention to everything!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the independent spirit. This city forces you to make your own thing happen. I don’t think there’s an understanding of how awesome the talent in this city really is. I think if people did understand, there would be more support & unity.
