Meet Ryan Taylor of East End Barber

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Taylor.

Ryan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We opened in April of 2015 in what was at the time a doctors office converted into a 4 suite building. When we first opened it was just myself and Bones cutting hair, we had both worked together at the Cutthroat off Washington Ave. Johnny was in barber school and working as our front desk guy.

Since then Johnny has graduated barber school and become a full-time barber at the shop, and we’ve expanded from 2 barbers to 8 barbers with many of us living here in the neighborhood.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It certainly hasn’t been a smooth road, when we first opened the only business open in our building was a real estate firm. Since then the real estate firm(refuge) has moved and we’ve gone from a 4 suite building to a 3 suite building with us being the only business open. It’s been a unique challenge getting people to come check us out over here but thankfully people have… and they’ve told their friends. We’ve relied mostly on word of mouth and taking care of our clients.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about east end barber – what should we know?
We’re an 8 chair appointment based barber shop with a retail space on the east end of downtown. We specialize in traditional barber cuts, beard trims, and hot towel shaves. We also sell vinyl records and men’s clothing. We’ve managed to carve out our own unique cave here on telephone rd where we can be ourselves and create and commune with others in the neighborhood and feel comfortable doing so. We also have complimentary sigma brew on tap which is always an added bonus.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
We’re authentic and in our own lane, and I think that what attracts people to our shop. Some of us are tattooed weirdos, some of us are nerds, but we’re all passionate about the barber trade and honor and respect the barbershop as a community hub.
