Meet Sachin Nair of YPM

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sachin Nair.

Sachin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in this great City. My parents immigrated to Houston in the late 1970’s from a coastal state in southern India called Kerala (“God’s Own Country”). I was born at Hermann (before Memorial was added) Hospital. I attended Keyworth’s Kiddie Korner, Mrs. Wagner’s, Red Elementary, Pershing Middle School, Bellaire High School, and the University of Houston, Central and Downtown campuses.

After graduating with my Bachelor of Accounting degree from UHD in 2006, I joined a “Start-up” Property Management Company. Over the next 5 years, I helped grow and expand the Company, managing a portfolio of over 275 Single Family Homes, as well as several Apartment Complexes and Homeowner Associations.

In 2012, I began working for a REIT (American Homes 4 Rent) that was just entering the Houston Market. Over the next year, I helped hire and train staff, Leasing Agents, etc., as well as manage and lease a portfolio of over 1,500 Single Family Homes.

After leaving AH4R in 2013, I decided to apply my skill-sets as a Property Manager, however, focus more on being a licensed Salesperson and Realtor, helping individuals and families buy, sell, lease, and/or invest in Real Estate.

In 2016, I decided to continue my own path in Real Estate, graduating from being just a Property Manager / Realtor to Broker. Over the last 5 years, I am humbled to say I have closed over 125 transactions, individually managed a portfolio of about 20 Single Family Homes, and now have 3 active Agents who are a part of the YPM Family.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Most definitely not. At times, it feels like it’s not even a road anymore. From the very beginning of my career, I traveled the path less taken. I come from a Home where both of my parents retired from very secure, government jobs. My Mom a Registered Nurse with the V. A. Hospital. My Dad a Mailhandler with the United States Post Office.

I am the youngest of three siblings, whose oldest Sister is a Doctor and older Brother an Engineer, so I am sure you can understand that the decision to join a Start-up right after graduating College, especially during a “Recession”, was not very easy.

Ironically, the next most difficult decision in my career was to leave the same Start-up Company I had taken a chance on. A Company I helped create, nourish, and grow for over several years. I felt I was losing a part of me. I felt I was abandoning the Clients, Homeowners, Tenants, Employees, Vendors, and Contractors that depended on me.

However, in difficult times, I was given the advice to always do what is best for Family and things will be okay. It’s crazy to say, but the decisions to join, and to leave the same Company was the best decisions I could have made for my career.

After leaving the Start-up, I got my Real Estate license, then began working for a REIT, which was a completely new experience for me. It was my first time working a “Corporate”, 9 AM to 5 PM job. It was the first time I had a consistent paycheck with good benefits, it was the first time I understood the meaning of what paid-time-off truly meant. During this time, I got married, my Wife and I purchased our very first Home together, and added a rescue Dog to our Family. Everything started off great, however, as time went on, I realized corporate politics were more important to this Company then its Employees, Tenants, and Contractors. Unethical behavior was starting to be practiced in a Company that I truly did not have complete control over. Again, I was faced with a difficult decision.

Do I continue with this horrible Company, or do I pursue a Career in Real Estate on my own? I was just starting my own Family and now had a mortgage and other financial responsibilities, but was reminded of an article I read on the cost of missed opportunities. I knew I was good at my job, but I knew I had a chance of doing even better, so made the tough decision to leave this Company as well.

Over the last 5 years, since deciding to start on my own path, my Wife and I were blessed with our 2.5-year-old Daughter and 7-month-old Son. It’s not easy juggling Family, work, and personal life, all while navigating this difficult path of Entrepreneurship and Real Estate, but there are, and will always be difficulties. The older I get, the more I realize and appreciate that in life and business, nothing truly worth comes easy.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
