Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Perez.
Samantha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I contribute my decision in pursuing the beauty industry to the memories of watching my grandmother apply her make up. What started as a hobby quickly turned into a passion. I was captivated by the connection I was able to build with each client by simply enhancing their beauty.
Shortly after the completion of cosmetology school in 2015, I was offered a position at Mac Cosmetics. Let me just say, WOW! It was here that I gained the knowledge of products, time management and working under pressure. Understanding the innovative techniques of the Artistry taught me who I was as an artist and the direction in which I would pursue my career.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth ride by any means. From collaborating with other artists for free, endless hours creating my portfolio and social media content in hopes to be recognized. However, my faith in God helps me overcome any obstacle and keeps me focused on my goals.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Currently, I am a freelance makeup artist and a wax specialist. My decision to work independently allows me to continue doing what I love, all while offering my clients the comfort and convenience of being in their own home or a preferred location.
Each client is different, and it is important that every client who sits in my chair feels comfortable. Therefore, I begin with discussing the importance of Skin Care and the best products to meet their needs. I believe an artist must remain versatile. (I love clients that add a little pop of color to their life, whether that be through eyeshadow or lip color!) In the end, my client’s skin must look flawless with features that are well-defined and sculpted but the overall finish needs to be an enhancement to their natural beauty. It is more than a makeup appointment; it is an experience!
My proudest accomplishments since becoming a freelance artist have been: Working the BET LIVE Experience in LA in 2019 with Uoma beauty. Offering tutorial classes for individuals/groups who acquire about the makeup industry and collaborating with photographers to create a vision in one picture. However, these moments would not be possible without the following individuals. First and foremost, my parents who have played a humongous role in my life by supporting my decisions 100%. The incredible artists at Mac Cosmetics who were kind enough to be my models for me to practice my skills. My clients and friends on social media who continue to book and repost my work y’all are the true MVP’s. Last but surely not least, my friend and mentor, Kierra Lanice, who was instrumental in helping me turn my dreams into reality!
By the Grace of God, I have met some incredible people along this journey who have contributed to my success. They continue to support me as I grow as an artist, always striving for more. To each and everyone of you… THANK YOU!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that city of Houston because it’s so diverse. What I dislike about Houston is the traffic!
