Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Wong
Samantha , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Psychology has always captivated me—its ability to unravel the complexities of the mind and human behavior feels endlessly intriguing. I’ve spent much of my life observing how people navigate their surroundings and overcome challenges with resilience. When I began my undergraduate studies, I initially set out to double major in psychology and nursing. However, it didn’t take long to realize that nursing wasn’t my calling. This left me at a crossroads, grappling with uncertainty and the often discouraging opinions about the career prospects for psychology majors.
Despite my doubts, I encountered small but meaningful moments of encouragement. Classmates often opened up to me, sharing their struggles and life experiences. While I was deeply moved by their trust, I felt ill-equipped to provide the guidance they sought. My academic advisor first suggested counseling as a potential path—a common trajectory for psychology graduates. That simple suggestion planted an idea that would eventually grow into a purpose.
After earning my bachelor’s degree in psychology, I began working in an afterschool program for children. While group activities were enjoyable, I found myself most fulfilled during one-on-one interactions, discovering each child’s unique personality. One experience stands out vividly: While playing with a young boy, lining up blocks like dominoes, he began to open up about his sadness over his parents’ separation. They hadn’t explained it to him, and he struggled to understand. As we talked, I watched his mood shift; by the time his parents arrived, he was smiling and cheerful. That moment felt profoundly rewarding and cemented my desire to help others through counseling.
Reflecting on my journey, I realize how fortunate I’ve been to have incredible mentors, supportive peers, a dedicated supervisor, and a loving family who have guided me every step of the way. Their encouragement and my experiences have shaped my path to becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate, a role that allows me to provide the understanding and support I’ve always sought to give.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate has been a journey filled with challenges and turning points. Initially, I pursued a STEM-related path, influenced by the model minority myth and the perception that it guaranteed financial success. However, nursing school proved not to be the right fit, prompting me to reflect deeply on my goals. Graduating with a Bachelor’s in Psychology marked another crossroads as I navigated the uncertain job market.
Soon after starting a job, the pandemic struck. Thankfully, my family and friends encouraged me to apply to graduate school. I was accepted and began my studies online. Each semester brought its own challenges, including the Great Texas Freeze of 2021, which burst our pipes and tested my resilience. Through it all, I leaned on my faith, family, professors, cohort members, and friends, whose support made it possible for me to achieve this milestone.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
YouTube has been a great resource for work due to the myriad resources, training, and research. There are a plethora of videos on grounding exercises, meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, coping skills, etc. In terms of books, I find the topics about intergenerational trauma fascinating. I recommend reading:
Self-Care for Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents: Honor Your Emotions, Nurture Your Self, and Live with Confidence by Dr. Lindsay C. Gibson
Break the Cycle: A Guide to Healing Intergenerational Trauma by Dr. Mariel Buqué
It Didn’t Start with You: How Inherited Family Trauma Shapes Who We Are and How to End the Cycle by Mark Wolynn
