Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Pham.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sandra. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The Majestic Wedding was a long time coming. I graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in Business Management in 2011. During my time there, I changed my major multiple times; still figuring out what career path I wanted to go towards. I volunteered at church by teaching Sunday school for over six years thinking I wanted to become a teacher one day. I was a girl scout leader within the Vietnamese community because I loved the outdoors and wanted to teach our future leaders the importance of our cultural heritage and to learn about the valuable life lessons and survival skills that they wouldn’t learn in school. Throughout all the years of volunteering within the community and at school, I had discovered that I really had a passion to plan all the social events and parties and that I would be the go-to girl my friends and family would come to. Whether it be for a special occasion such as a wedding, birthday party, bridal shower, holiday dinners, retreats or camping trips — You name it. I volunteered to plan it.
My mom was a florist back in Vietnam while my dad was a pilot during the Vietnam War. During the time he was in the military, he often wrote books and poetry about life before, during, and after the war. He still writes them till this day. Once they moved to America, they started their own businesses. And that’s where I got my first glimpse of what being a business owner was really like – tough, but definitely worth it. We also had plenty of other family members venture in entrepreneurship as well. From having a cousin move across the country to start her own nail polish line, to another starting her own baking company, to others having their own furniture stores, beauty salons, insurance agencies, marketing companies, and beyond. I was surrounded by business owners. And being a part of a family full of creative entrepreneurs, I just knew I had to do the same.
At first, I never thought I would actually do it as a full-time career. But here we are, years later.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It is never a smooth road when you’re trying to start your own business!
Right after college, I worked for a restaurant interior design company. To most people, it sounded like a pretty cool and fun first job, right? But to me, it was still missing something. I wasn’t given the creative freedom I had desired – to make my own decisions or create my own designs.
After job searching some more, I finally found an opening at an events venue near home and thought “why not?” It wouldn’t hurt to apply even though I had no professional experience in the industry. I ended up getting hired on the spot and it felt awesome! I finally got my foot in the door of the events and wedding industry! Fast forward five years later, and I’m still at the same venue and still doing the same thing I was doing my first year working there. I got comfortable with where I was and enjoyed the flexibility that I had. But again, I wasn’t given the creative freedom I had desired – to make my own decisions or create my own designs. I was overworked, undervalued and unmotivated.
After getting some experience under my belt, I knew it was time to leave and start what I’ve been dreaming about doing for years. But deep down inside, I was terrified. All these questions and concerns were always on my mind. “What if I don’t succeed? What if no one likes my work? What if no one hires me? What do I do then??!!”
With a supportive family, I was able to get out of my comfort zone and meet others in the industry. And after teaming up with a couple of other local vendors, The Majestic Wedding was born.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are still a fairly new and growing company. We’ve been around for less than two years with a small team of 5 members. The services that we offer at The Majestic Wedding consists of full-service wedding planning packages, partial wedding planning packages, day of coordination wedding packages, dj & entertainment, lighting, photobooth, and invitation & print media.
We set ourselves apart from others with our continuous interaction with clients, our ability to deliver the most memorable events and by having a team so dedicated to the love for what we do and the ability to work as a team.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always the shy and quiet one out of all my family, friends, and classmates. I tend to keep to myself and mind my own business and only get involved when I am asked to do something. As a child and even so today, Christmas was always my favorite time of year. Not only because I got presents and got to eat lots delicious food, but because I got to go pick out a real Christmas tree every year with my sisters. We would stay up all night decorating the house while our parents were asleep and then having them wake up, surprised to a house fully decorated in holiday galore! It’s just the best time of year because it’s the time you get to be around those you care about most.
It’s still a shock to a lot of people that this quiet little girl they’ve known for years is now running a business on her own. I still surprise myself at times!
