Meet Sandy Hinderliter of Salt of the Earth Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandy Hinderliter.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My husband experienced increased bouts of bronchitis since our move to Houston 7 years ago. He was repeatedly taking antibiotics and steroids. Those medications take a terrible toll on the body and he was no exception. We were looking for anything that would help him without having to take those medications. We read an article about salt rooms and how people were experiencing benefit. After researching, we discovered that the closest room to us was in Austin. We drove to Austin weekly for 3 months to see if it would help. It did. It’s not feasible to continue to drive to Austin weekly so we had to decide to either build something in our house or help others as well. We decided to help others. May 27, 2017 was our 1 year anniversary. We rely mostly on networking and referrals to get the word out. Our goal is to have several locations throughout Houston so that the whole metro area can experience this natural treatment.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our biggest challenge has been education to the public. Even though this treatment has been successful for over 200 years in Eastern Europe, it’s only been 10-15 years here in America. People are skeptical that something as simple as breathing in tiny salt particles can really help alleviate their respiratory and skin issues. Most people that consistently come into our facility see a positive difference regarding their conditions.

Salt of the Earth Spa – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a salt room. This is a natural treatment for people with any kind of respiratory condition or skin condition. We provide a relaxing, spa like experience. Most people ask if they can just spend the night in our rooms. We have 3 rooms. A kid’s room where there are murals on the walls and toys on the floor. The kids don’t even really know they are getting a treatment. The two adult rooms are dimly lit with ocean sounds and light music playing. The larger adult room has chairs for up to 6 people at a time. The smaller room has chairs for up 3 people at a time. We also contract with a massage therapist that can do a massage in the smaller room while the individual is getting the salt treatment. Each room works the same. We blow pharmaceutical grade salt into the air in tiny micro particles. The individual breathes in the salt particles. Because salt is anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory the individual experiencing a breathing or skin exacerbation finds relief. This is not a one-time treatment. While most people do experience relief from 1 session it will be temporary relief. This treatment works best when done at least twice a week for the 1st 10-20 sessions and then the individual can monitor to see when they need to return. There are no negative side effects to this treatment. I’m most proud of the fact that we are providing a real alternative to people that either can’t take medication, don’t want to take medication or medication doesn’t work for them. We are a totally unique concept and I feel that we provide a very welcoming and relaxing environment that gives people a 45 minute respite from their busy lives while providing a true health benefit.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I have always been one to help people. So being able to help people in a tangible way where they feel results almost immediately has been a real blessing and lets me go home feeling good at night.
