Hi Sanjana, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began my career as a teacher in Fort Bend ISD, but as a mother of two—one in high school and the other in elementary school—balancing the strict schedules of teaching with the demands of family life became increasingly difficult. With my husband having a travelling job, our lives were dictated by rigid timetables, leaving me longing for more flexibility. I wanted a career that would not only allow me to work from home but also give me the freedom to be present for my children.

I explored several options. Becoming a lawyer seemed natural, given my family background, but pursuing law at this stage of life felt daunting—demanding years of study and significant investment. I also considered motivational speaking, but I realized I needed more time and practice before stepping confidently into that field.

It was during this period of exploration that a close friend suggested digital marketing. The idea resonated immediately. Digital marketing offered the flexibility I was seeking, the opportunity to design my own schedule, and most importantly, a way to channel my passion for helping others. To me, marketing is more than just promoting products or services—it is about connecting people with the solutions they need.

Motivated by this vision, I enrolled in the Digital Marketing Bootcamp at UC Berkeley, completing an intensive four-month program. Afterward, while considering job opportunities, another friend encouraged me to start my own business. That idea sparked something in me. Instead of simply seeking a role, I realized I had the chance to create one—one that aligned with my values, skills, and goals.

That is how my journey into entrepreneurship began, and how I launched my own digital marketing business: a venture built on flexibility, passion, and the drive to help others succeed.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?

Starting a new career from scratch is never easy, and for me, the transition from teaching to business was both exciting and daunting. In teaching, I was confident in my knowledge and skills, but stepping into the world of entrepreneurship meant entering a field where I had no prior experience. With no family background in business and no personal experience to draw upon, I knew this would be one of my greatest challenges.

Thankfully, I wasn’t alone. A close friend guided and supported me throughout the process, but even then, I constantly asked myself: Am I doing this the right way? Determined to start strong, I made sure to set up my company properly from the very beginning. Within the first week, I registered my business as an LLC, ensuring that I was building on a solid and professional foundation.

Yet, the reality of entrepreneurship soon became clear: the biggest challenge is not just starting, but finding clients. As a teacher, I never had to think about seeking out people to serve—the students were always there. In business, however, attracting clients requires a completely different mindset. While I love connecting with people and can talk to anyone with ease, I quickly realized that building a client base takes strategy, persistence, and patience.

Despite these challenges, I am grateful for the few businesses I’ve had the privilege to work with so far. Each experience has taught me valuable lessons and reaffirmed my belief that growth in business is a continuous journey. Finding clients and learning to navigate the many rules and processes of entrepreneurship remain challenges, but they are also opportunities for me to grow stronger, more resilient, and more confident as a business owner.
