Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Cartwright.
Hi Sarah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My love for photography started when I was in the fifth grade when I was on one of my annual family trips around the world. We headed to Tanzania, Africa, to learn more about the culture there as well as to go on safaris to see all the beautiful animals and land. It was when my dad pulled out his digital camera and I immediately took interest in it. Mind you, I have never in my life taken a photography class or had any interest in photography growing up. I was fascinated with the fact that with a click of a button, you could capture a moment in time and have that forever with you. Throughout that whole trip, it was just me figuring out how everything works on a camera and taking picture after picture. However, the excitement didn’t stop there; when we got home from a trip, my dad taught me the simple steps of uploading your pictures to an editing software and editing them to your liking. That trip forever changed my life forever because that’s when my journey and calling for photography started. Over the years, I have been given so many opportunities to grow as a photographer. From my education to taking my first photography class at PinOak Middle School to entering my photos in a high school photography competition and getting 1st and 2nd place. After graduating college, I decided I wanted to pursue photography as my degree. I started at San Jacinto College, starting with my basics in art and taking photography classes too. After getting my associates, I then transferred to University of Saint Thomas, where I got my Bachelors in Studio Art in Photography. After college, I have been given so many opportunities to get to where I am today. I’m so thankful for my clients who have given me an opportunity to try something new. From doing my first studio shoots with friends who design clothes to my friends who have been pregnant doing their maternity shoots and baby showers. I am so happy to be where I am today as a Photographer, and can’t wait to see what the future holds for me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It for sure has not been an easy road, I think with any business, you’re going to have some bumps along the way. I think one of the main things that was a struggle was during COVID. I graduated right in the midst of it, and with wanting to get a start on my business, it was hard to get started right away because of restrictions.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
So as an artist, I am a professional photographer. I would like to say that I do a little bit of everything when it comes to my photography. I started mainly with travel photography and worked my way up to doing portrait photography. When I say I do a little bit of everything, it is because I have clients that are always wanting different things. From doing fashion shoots, headshots, maternity, baby, and even weddings. I am so thankful for my clients who have given me the opportunity to show my creativity and try somethings new. My favorite photoshoots to photograph right now is maternity. It’s such an amazing feeling to be a part of their pregnancy and show the beauty of it. The thing that I am most proud of is my clients! It’s always such an honor and proud moment for any client to choose you for whatever photo needs they have. I think the most rewarding thing is when I get to post my photos on my social media to show the outcome of them and let people know how it came out.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
The thing that matters to me the most is the experience that my clients have with me during a photoshoot. Some people might think that all photographers do is just take a picture with a single button, but that is definitely not the case at all. I think what matters the most is making sure my client is having a great time and their vision is being heard during the shoot. This really helps build a good client relationship not only for a client to come back to you because they enjoyed their experience so much but also to help you grow too.
