Meet Sarah Coligan of Urban Soap Bar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Coligan.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m 28 years old, and mother to a beautiful little girl, Scarlett Jane. I started this company while I was in college for nursing and just had Scarlett. I was on a health kick to be a better version of myself and make sure that my daughter did not follow down the same unhealthy path that I did.

We as a family made sure everything that went in and on our body, was safe and good for us. I since have lost 100lbs and continue to lose weight and change my life around to make this a lifestyle change and not a diet. I started making soaps and bath bombs, beard oils and more for family and friends and they loved them so much they started purchasing them off me. Urban Soap Bar was originally known as Scarlett’s Garden Incorporated in 2014, named after my daughter.

My goal was and still is to use local farmers for my ingredients to help support Texas Farming. We have slowly started to incorporate that into our products. We use all natural, pure and organic ingredients in most of our products otherwise we offer safe man-made synthetics. When I first started I was going to buy a company from someone, then decided I wanted something to feel proud of, something with a clean slate and something I could make my own. I had no idea what I was doing on a professional level.

My father has always been a busy man, he taught me so much and guided me in the right direction. I took classes, I perfected my craft and went up from there. My first passion has always been helping people. I wanted a business where I could help people physically, mentally, and financially, etc. By using small businesses, local farming, and some of the best ingredients we could find we have created a family business that gives back to the community. We host fundraisers for local and international schools, businesses, organizations and good causes.

We now host DIY Parties to teach people how to make their own products and give them a chance to customize their products to their wants and needs. Our tagline is Pick Your Passion. We chose this because, at Urban Soap Bar, you can customize any of the products in our store. We have something for every skin type and try to fulfill all your health and beauty needs. From organic to safe synthetic we’ve got what you need.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This has been one of the hardest and yet rewarding things I have done in my life. There is always a struggle, but there is always a solution. I lost my mother, my best friend, suddenly and unexpectedly in November of last year just after losing my first storefront to Hurricane Harvey. I’ve definitely hit some road bumps every step of the way, but I wouldn’t give up what I do.

Please tell us about Urban Soap Bar.
I think Urban Soap Bar breaks the mold when it comes to other soap companies because we allow you to customize your products. We show you the ins and outs of what you are putting on your body, and we teach you how to create bath art! We make it a fun and unique experience through themed DIY Parties! We have parties for all ages and parties for 21+ and you can BYOB!

Our products are not only safe, but they come in many unique shapes, sizes and fragrances to make it more fun! We pour our heart and souls into our products. Urban Soap Bar also does fundraisers, benefits, feed the homeless events and low-cost pet adoptions with local animal shelters because we believe in giving back to the community.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I would have it to do over, I would’ve definitely started this sooner! I was so afraid to jump in because I didn’t have enough faith in myself and its taken a lot for me to overcome that.

In life, we need to learn to accept that not everyone is going to like us and be ok with that. We only need to worry about those that do and it goes the same way with business. You can’t please everyone.
