Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Hankla.
Sarah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up a swimmer and eventually switched to cross country running in high school as it became apparent rather quickly I’d go much further with my run talent than what I had in the pool! Fast forward to the end of college and I bought a bike with the guidance of my now husband who was on the Texas A&M cycling team. From there, I put it all together and got started in the sport of triathlon. I was coached from the beginning by the founder of ORR who, at the time, was just an independent coach. A year or so later, the ORR team had been formed and I had earned my pro card and was trying to juggle a career in public accounting with the training + racing load of a pro….it was a lot! So I started coaching a few athletes virtually with ORR to earn a little income and eventually get out of public accounting. By the end of that year, I took on a bigger role at ORR as the Business Manager. I’ve been with the company ever since, coaching, managing the finances, and now I serve as the Group Services Director along with my coaching duties.
Has it been a smooth road?
OutRival Racing has definitely gone through growth spurts and major changes, especially in the last few years. We were purchased by QT2 Systems which is a huge national and well-known endurance sports coaching brand. When that acquisition went through, our resources grew infinitely! We are definitely a stronger team of coaches because of it. It was a bit bumpy for a while (as all transitions are) implementing various changes but we are better for it.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
OutRival Racing is an endurance sports coaching company. We coach athletes “virtually” via an online training platform that allows us as coaches to write training schedules and then on the athlete end, for them to load their results and data into.
That’s our main form of tracking progress on a day in/day out basis in addition to email and phone call communication. Most athletes who come to us are triathletes but we also offer running and cycling coaching as well. We coach ALL levels, abilities, and distances from super sprint on up to IRONMAN and ultra distance.
As part of the QT2 Systems umbrella, we have a TON of resources. In addition to QT2 Systems and OutRival Racing, we also have The Run Formula, The Cycling Formula, and The Core Diet brands. All of these brands have talented folks with years of experience in what they do which means that when I have a question as a coach, I have plenty of folks to turn to for advice and knowledge. The Core Diet is huge for us as it allows us to offer training/racing fueling plans as well as daily nutrition plans to our athletes.
I’m most proud of our ability to help athletes achieve their goals and live healthier lifestyles in general. We’ve seen plenty of success stories and that’s so rewarding to be a part of!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely! We have great weather for being able to stay active all year round. Yes, it’s super hot in the Summer BUT our mild winters make up for it, in my opinion. The Woodlands specifically has great pathways for running and plenty of pools. Houston has Memorial Park which is one of my favorite spots for running! I do think our drivers could stand to be a bit friendlier to cyclists.

Sarah is extremely competent and committed to her coached clients. The “ALL levels” in this article is no exaggeration. Sarah coaches some great athletes, but is also effective with people like me! I knew I had to make some life changes as I approached the big 5-0 or I would be heading for some serious health issues. Sarah patiently coached me, taught me about running, swimming, heart rate training, and more. Now some five years later, those lessons have kept me out of trouble. I attribute on-going good health to Sarah! She’s the best!
