Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Hinman.
Sarah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Migrations started four years ago when a group of dancers wanted to bring more inclusive and globally inspired dance, vending, music and workshops to the Central Texas area. Inspired by the Migrations of Austin’s bat population that travels hundreds of miles through many countries to roost in downtown Austin’s Congress Street bridge; the ladies of the Migrations Team wanted to bring dancers of all descriptions from all genre to perform, meet, and learn in a vibrant and safe space. Migrations run once a year and feature three days of globally inspired workshops, two gala shows, vending and more to dancers of Central Texas and beyond.
Has it been a smooth road?
Migrations has been a learning opportunity for all of us on the Migrations Team. The festival team is comprised of all local dancers with varying personal and professional backgrounds. The biggest challenges were not what teachers to bring in but the more mundane ones, like bank accounts, and how do we legally list our business, and filing taxes. Exciting stuff, I know! Through all the challenges, we have managed to learn and bring our experiences to the next festival year and make it even better for our attendees.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Migrations: World Music & Dance Festival – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
As dancers, we want to grow and add to skills to make our audience even more excited about what’s available in the local dance community. Migrations has always had it base in belly dance however the festival has been geared for anyone who loves dance, at any level to be able to enjoy the festival from novice to professional. Even those who appreciate the dance can come to our gala shows and just enjoy what Austin and national dancers have to offer while getting a chance to learn and shop local venders and artisans. We even partnered with The Bat Refuge the last two years to bring rehabilitated bats to the festival to teach our attendees about the bat colonies in the area!
The last several years we have been able to provide workshops in several genres of dance including Tahitian, Hula, Chinese, Flamenco, Samba, Flo Arts and Fusion and Modern dance forms. Many we were not aware were available in Texas until we started looking and we are overjoyed that they chose Migrations as a platform to spread their knowledge.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Central Texas is such a vibrant melting pot of cultures, ideas, and dance forms and it so gratifying to able meet dancers with different experiences and knowledge in one place.
