Meet Sarah Kwang of Heights Endodontics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Kwang.

Hi Sarah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Dr. Scott and I started Heights Endodontics as an idea years ago. At the time, Heights Endodntics was an idea and we did not have a name yet. We dedicated an extensive period of time to market research and strategy. We were met with the phrase “the market is oversaturated” or “are you sure you want to leave your comfortable corporate job” and it goes on. It created doubts; however, eventually we were suddenly hit with the entrepreneurial spirit and we rolled the dice. Needless to say it was a favorable outcome dream to reality. Endodontics’ is not a popular field. We deal with dental trauma, perform root canals and surgeries to aid the general dentist in helping to save your natural teeth. Our patient population is referred and typically in pain due to an infection and our practice is to “help” get the person out of pain and thereby assist the body in healing the infection. Our practice is here, systems in place and we are slowly growing one day at a time with our brand “We are here to help”.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a month road. Nothing in life ever is and if it was life would be boring. At times it almost seemed like the practice was never going to happen with covid and other delays. Other delays involved negotiations in our original location. After months of negotiations, and countless billed legal hours we finally reached an agreement to sign the lease at 2pm on a Tuesday. Minute’s prior our broker called and said the deal was off. Moving on six months later, we found another location. Covid was a major obstacle, however in hindsight without covid and the city shutdown our office would still be under construction. So the precautions taken by the city for public safety, became an advantage point our project manager and construction team utilized and we are thoroughly pleased. With the countless obstacles encountered, each of our life experiences and time spent training to reach this level taught us in a different way to expect and adapt to delays and detours. Our endurance in handling the multiple setbacks and pivots is due to a supportive circle. I am talking teams of people who help to keep recharging our spirit of fearlessness.

We’ve been impressed with Heights Endodontics, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a dental specialty practice located in the Houston Heights. Both doctors are HBCU graduates. Xavier university of Louisiana (Dr. Sarah Kwang DDS MSD; Houston TX) and Howard University (Dr. Dontra Scott DDS; Baltimore, MD). We trained four years in dental school, completed intense 1 year general practice hospital based residency programs, followed by two more additional years in the specialty of Endodontics. We are dentists who specialize in Endodontics’. A field in which we deal with the intricate details of the pain pathway of the head and neck, and oral bacteria that invade nerves of teeth leading to dental infections and abscess’. We are most proud of the ability to practice in our created space where we can be increasingly conscientious with our patients. Be informative in educating our patients in the decision and process they will undertake. And where our skills and talents can be displayed in a relaxed environment with all the modern bells and whistles.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Prior to covid, dentistry had a clear strong prosperous outlook. We are in the midst of pandemic so I am not sure what will take place after. There seems to be a lot of changes with the employment opportunities and thereby benefits offered to their employees. Dental concerns tend to not be an immediate concern as other pressing matters may arise for families. However, a glimmer of hope is Texas is next up, with the vast empowering economic changes taking place. Included, is the Houston’s economy is diversifying and shifting from a sole dependency of oil and gas. This diversified shift helps to stabilize the small businesses including the industry of dentistry.
