Meet Sarah Lewis of High Canopy Massage in League City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Lewis.

Sarah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m a graduate of the Massage Therapy Program at San Jacinto College. Serving the people in my community is something that I have always been passionate about, and for a long time I worked as a paralegal at a family law firm. During that time, it was only my close friends and immediate family members who would ask me for massages, and I was more than happy to lend a hand (or two!) whenever I had spare time. But it became obvious to me that massage was something I was interested in far more than just a treat for my close friends. I wanted to learn more about the technical elements of massage therapy, so I made the difficult decision to make a change in my career in 2016. I fully invested myself into the massage program, which includes highly technical science courses such as Anatomy and Physiology, Pathology, and Kinesiology. The educational aspect of massage is serious business! We were taught about the laws and business aspects pertaining to the profession, as well. We learned about the physiological and psychological effects of supplemental aspects to massage, such as hydrotherapy (the use of hot towels, ice, etc.), various oils and herbs, hot stones, and even color schemes! My ultimate goal is to provide Sports Massage and its various techniques to athletes, since the Houston area is such an incredible place for athletic activities of all kinds.

I’m very blessed to be the owner of my own property, a classic Victorian built in 1911, which is where I’ve decided to run my business, as well. My massage room is recently repainted and everything is ready for you to have a phenomenal experience! I can also take my table on the go, and come to you for a small fee and within a reasonable distance. Thank you for taking the time to read my story, and I look forward to helping you with your aches and pains, or simply treating you to a relaxing mini-spa day.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Every adventure, especially a career change, has difficulties, and some of the ones I faced were the desires to quit and go back to what I had been doing which was a sure thing, as well as being concerned about the financial adjustment (following your passion won’t necessarily make you wealthy, but it will make you happy!). Operating a massage practice out of a residence also requires going through many business and legal checkpoints. I’ve been seriously blessed to have a great deal of support not only from my friends, but also from my church and throughout my community.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the High Canopy Massage story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m known for putting people to sleep. No joke! My sessions are scheduled out for 3 hours to allow plenty of time for my clients to relax and enjoy themselves, even enjoy a hot cup of tea, and for us to communicate about their medical and physical histories. If you fall asleep on my table, I consider it the most sincere (and unintentional) compliment! I’m very proud of my passion for this industry and the myriad health benefits that it offers due to being minimally invasive and maximally therapeutic. At my location, there won’t be 10 other clients in a waiting room, or a bunch of employees gossiping. My business is situated inside a classic Victorian home setting, and nestled in a terrific, and quiet, residential community. The location is literally near everything – other businesses, shopping, parks, recreation, main thoroughfares, and of course, a Starbucks right across the street!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Due to my spiritual grounding in God and Jesus, I don’t use the word “luck” in that regard. Luck to me means being able to enjoy the sunshine on a beautiful day, but I don’t consider luck to be a determining factor in what happens in my life’s journey. I owe everything I am and have to God; He has been extraordinarily generous in blessing me with a heart that desires to serve and bring healing and comfort to others, and He has given me the means and opportunity to do just that.
