Meet Sarah Sed of Houston Axe Throwing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Sed.

Hi Sarah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We opened Houston Axe Throwing June 13th, 2017 on International Axe Throwing Day. We were the 3rd axe-throwing location in the country, and the first in Texas. We’ve been teaching people how to chuck axes with accuracy since and have two locations. Our newest one is in Katy off of Fry Rd, and our flagship location is in Bellaire off of Bellaire & 59.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Our first location opened just a couple of months before Hurricane Harvey hit Houston. We spent a lot of time building the business back up from the momentum we lost while the city rebuilt all around us. Eventually, we decided to open a 2nd location in Katy, and then COVID hit about a month later. It was really terrible timing both times, but we’ve worked hard and with the help of our wonderful coaches, we’ve been able to keep the doors open and keep teaching people about axe throwing.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We specialize in creating an experience that people want to come back and enjoy again and again. Our coaches love the sport and teaching people how to throw. With each booking, you get personalized coaching to help throwers improve very quickly. It’s surprising how quickly we can get people to stick with accuracy and their expectations change from hoping to stick it just once to wanting to stick a bullseye before they leave.

We offer an array of reservations to cater to groups of different sizes for different lengths of time. Our most popular is 1 hour with an intro lesson & personalized coaching that can be booked directly online for groups of up to 18 people. For corporate teambuilders, our most popular is our 1.5-hour or 2.5-hour fully guided sessions that include a coach full time to help facilitate fun axe throwing games and a tournament as well for the longer session. We can also help host meetings, a sit-down dinner, or an open house-style event. Just email us and we can work with your group size for appointments any day or time with advance notice.

We also recently won an award for having the most league members in the state of Texas, and have had one of the largest leagues in the country for several years. We attribute that to our teaching methods, great rewards program for league members, and an atmosphere that makes everyone feel like an extension of our axe-throwing family. Whether you’re a beginner just looking to get better, or one of our league members who compete at the World Axe Throwing Championships every year, we cater to your needs and throwing ability.

What does success mean to you?
Success to me is being able to provide an activity to the community that they can enjoy. A chance to escape from the troubles of the world for a while. A place where they can go to celebrate a birthday, or anniversary or even hang out with colleagues. It’s just a bonus that they learn a new sport or skill in the process.
