My mother didn’t need a special occasion to bake her delicious pastries, she’s still the Head Baker of our kitchen. Once I got older, I started to help her more when she baked and was truly amazed of the beautiful creativities that come from batter. I started gaining more interest in cupcakes when I wanted to add mini individual cakes to a cake my mom had made.
I started to see all the work of art that was created from cupcakes on Social Media and fell in love. I began to practice my art along the years and It wasn’t until December 2017 that I felt confident enough to create an Instagram page just for my cupcakes. It went from being a hobby to a passion. When creating your own business, promotion comes to mind. This cupcake tastes delicious, but how am I going to convince the person looking at the picture? I photograph all of my cupcakes. You’re not finished until you’ve taken the perfect picture. I am very fortunate to have such wonderful friends and family who have supported my baking journey. It brings immense joy to my soul.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Its been somewhat of a smooth road. The struggles are always there during the journey, it’s about how you handle them. It’s frustrating when you think this recipe will be the right one, but it fails and then you realize you forgot to add such ingredient when you see it on the kitchen counter. I will admit there has been some times where I just want to call the client and cancel the order because that particular day hasn’t gone too well. Thats when I start baking and start forgetting about all fo my troubles. Or when the client is about to arrive and a cupcake falls off the table thats when you start freaking out for half a second but also remember this is the reason why you keep extras. Another struggle is having people not believing in you. Makes you question whether you’re good enough. You have to keep your self worth high.
Cupcakes By Selene – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a self-taught baker that created a small business called “Cupcakes By Selene.” I specialize in cupcakes but will be adding new stuff to the menu next year. I am most proud of my support system. I have an incredible group of supporters that allow my baking creations to be a part of their special event. It’s hard to pick a top cupcake because as I keep adding flavors there’s always a new favorite. But I will say, I am mainly known for my top seller, Apple Cinnamon. I created this cupcake with an apple craving. It is a cupcake with the perfect combination of apple and cinnamon topped with also my top frosting, Cream Cheese. I am very passionate about my business, I’ve worked so hard to make my cupcakes known. I take so much pride in my work because it represents me. I thank God every day for giving me this amazing gift.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me will always be bringing my clients visions to life. I feel overjoyed when I see their expressions. I feel the need to deliver more than what’s expected from me. It will always be about possessing great memories in my life.
