Meet Sendy Higuero-Jimenez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sendy Higuero-Jimenez.

Sendy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve lived in Lecherias, Venezuela before I moved to the United State. I was born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela. My father is from Spain and my mother is from Venezuela, so I grew up in a mixed heritage home where I would eat paella one day and pabellon criollo the other. As a child, I was always very active, talkative and loved every sport possible. Later on, in life, when I was thirteen and had just finished eighth grade, my parents moved my younger brother and I to Katy, Texas. There I went to Katy High School and lived for fourteen years seeing the city grow by the minute.

When I was a junior in high school, I saw the need to help financially at home and got my first job. I started working at Dairy Queen near my home preparing ice cream and checking in guests at the front register. At that job is where I first learned that I enjoyed talking to people and enjoyed giving great customer service. After that initial job, I was hooked and stayed working in the customer service/ retail industry for the next seven years of my life. I worked at Philly Connection where I learned to cook and work on my own, Tommy Hilfiger where I learned about the retail world and how to train others, Ann Taylor Loft where I learned to manage a store and employees, and Coach where I learned to sell over three million dollars in outlet store priced handbags and accessories.

Of course, it is important to mention that when I started working at Tommy Hilfiger at the age of 18, I had just gone back to school and started taking classes at Houston Community College. I did not want to forget about school and only focus on working and paying bills, I knew education was important and I made it fit within my schedule. After I left Coach, I went on to make a dream come true and work at Telemundo Houston as a Marketing Coordinator, which later on became a Marketing Specialist. While there I was able to be a part of so many projects and community initiatives that I hold close to my heart, just as Clear the Shelters and the voting initiative in 2018 alongside Mi Familia Vota, which I was the Houston captain for. I got the chance to work with many non-profit organizations, like the Alzheimer’s Association and Houston Parks Board, as well as with the City of Houston, the Texans, Dynamos, our national network for many national projects and many other companies.

While there, I got involved in anything and everything that I could and embraced every project and initiative. I learned and grew so much in that position, through every person and company team that I met, and every event that I was a part of. Recently this year, in April, I decided to leave Telemundo Houston, as I wanted and needed to explore the world of Real Estate. From there I went straight to Champions School of Real Estate. Where I received my certification as a Real Estate Agent in July and joined Berkshire Hathaway in August. So far, Real Estate is a new world to me, but one full of new beginnings, where I have a lot to learn and grow, but what excites me the most, is the opportunities that I will have in the near future to help others find the home of their dreams, others sell their house so they may move to a new home of their dreams. I look forward to those encounters and journeys, since part of the passion that I have in life is helping others, and I am happy to say that this new career will allow me to do that as well as Telemundo Houston did.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would definitely say that it has not been a smooth road and that I have had many obstacles in my way during many stages of my life, and I still do. Struggles and problems will never go away. But I’ve learned that how we react and what we do with them is what helps us move forward, or not.

When I had just graduated High School, the family car got taken away from us, and even though we did not have a car for two years, my mother and I found a way to continue working. We both held jobs and through the help and support of friends and co-workers, we were able to not miss work and pay our bills. Once we got a car, my mother and I would share it and would arrange our schedule so that we could get to work and I could go to school. We made it work and we felt blessed and thankful to be able to.

Another thing that I struggled with was school. I had to pay for it on my own and I worked full time, and we only had one car. Due to that, I would only take 2- 3 classes a semester when I could. It took me eight years to get through Community College but I got through it. When I got the job at Telemundo Houston, I tried transferring to the University of Houston to get my degree in Advertising, and was not able to attend classes as I could not financially cover the cost and was not able to qualify for enough financial aid. Regardless of that, I was able to have my Marketing job at Telemundo Houston and was able to qualify for the position due to my work experience.

So, with all this being said, what I take away from all of this is that school is very important and I tried my best to get my education, and I did, just not the traditional way. But, I have also have learned that working hard for your dreams, putting yourself and your talents out there, pays off.
