Today we’d like to introduce you to Sesalie Johnson and Vantroi Chapman.
The idea of pouring into the next generation of youth through basketball is what established the foundation of non – profit organization Future Leaders. Sesalie has a gift to teach the game of basketball through training and coaching which led to the birth of F.L.EX. Training. Upon working with student-athletes in the North Houston area, Sesalie partnered with New York native Vantroi Chapman, and their training and mentorship expanded quickly pushing student-athletes to maximize their potential on and off the court daily. Since then F.L.EX. Training and Future Leaders Basketball acquired the F.L.EX. Training Facility by appealing to student-athletes in the northern region of Houston, Texas and surrounding areas. The F.L.EX. Training Facility serves our community as a multi-purpose center generating a positive impact for all members of the community. Not only is there a commitment to developing the student athletes on and off the court, the facility is also utilized for community outreach.
Has it been a smooth road?
Getting to this point has brought along some challenges but it’s been worth it. The building acquisition and sustaining it has by far been our greatest challenge yet. Throughout the global pandemic COVID-19, we closed our doors due to ensuring the safety of our student-athletes’ and their families. We went two months with little to no income, however with the undeniable support of the many people who believe in us we were able to remain open with our biggest fundraiser to date.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Future Leaders Basketball & F.L.EX. Training – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
F.L.EX. Training enhances the way student-athletes approach training and human performance; offering everything needed to activate, educate and maximize a student-athlete’s potential on and off the court. The Future Leaders Basketball organization possess staff members and volunteers who are former student – athletes and are now successful in their selective professional careers providing mentorship to the Future Leaders apart of F.L.EX. Training. Our business also partners with 2 Empower Fitness offering strength and conditioning training to any and every student-athlete.
The acquisition of the F.L.EX. Training Facility has further allowed our student-athletes to achieve scholarships to colleges and universities. We are most proud of our businesses being able to equip student-athletes in Houston and the surrounding areas for life beyond the present moment. We take pride in inspiring them to be great in whatever they want to do.
What sets us apart from others is our belief in the wholistic student – athlete. We use the sport of basketball and it’s intricacies to inspire them to achieve success and develop into high character people where ever they go. The love of the game is what we all have in common but it was not until adulthood that Sesalie and Vantroi realized it’s bigger than basketball. This is what F.L.EX. Training and the Future Leaders organization instill in our student-athletes.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
We love the support that we have from our community. Parents not only trust us with their children’s development in the sport but they trust us with building the student-athlete’s character. Throughout the global pandemic, parents have continually entrusted us with their child’s maturation on and off the court as well as supported our vision. With multiple small businesses closing around us, we have been able to maintain our business with our parent’s support, whether it be donations through fundraiser or having their child come for training.
What we dislike the most in the city of Houston is the lack of opportunity for student-athletes to engage in a program like ours. Houston is a big city and there are many areas where they do not have this outlet. We have a wholistic approach to student-athletes; we know basketball is a microcosm of life where student-athletes can learn life lessons through the sport. However, for many young athletes the only way of dealing with adversity is through real-life situations that come with real-life consequences. If there were more programs like ours around the city, athletes would learn how to deal with frustration in a controlled environment rather than the streets.
