Today we’d like to introduce you to Shakeatha C. Davis.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am an attorney, speaker, and multi-passionate entrepreneur. I currently serve as Owner and Principal Attorney for the minority woman owned law firm, the S. Davis Law Group PLLC and ICreate Coworking Business Hub™ and S. Davis Studio LLC.
I am an expert at assisting small and mid-sized business owners with business growth and development strategy. I am extremely passionate about making a difference in upcoming businesses.
In addition to running a full time law practice, I host workshops and classes where I teach business law and educate small business owners how to advocate for themselves. I am excited to be hosting my next events! Visit my website at https://www.thesdavislawgroup.com to learn more about my upcoming events:
DIY Business Formation LABs – 1st Thursday of the month from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm CST
WBC Workshops – 3rd Friday of the month from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm CST
CEO’s Coffee & Chats – 2nd Thursday of the month at 9:30 am CST
I recently partnered with the WBEA-Women’s Business Center (WBC) as a mastermind legal counselor and providers pro bono and discounted business assistance as part of my initiative to educate women business owners.
My philanthropic efforts include being a mentor with Station Houston and volunteer attorney for the Texas CBAR.
I have been a member of the Top 40 Under 40 for National Black Lawyers and Top 40 Under 40 in Business for the Women’s Association of Attorneys in Business Law for the past two years. My most recent accomplishment is getting the Texas Superlawyers Rising Star in Business Law for 2021 and 2022. It is a distinguished honor that less than 2.5% of lawyers are awarded.
Additionally, I was appointed Vice Chair of the Copyright and Social Media Committee for the American Bar Association for 2019-2021.
Aside from law, I am also an entrepreneur at S.Davis Studio, where I enjoy being an owner. S. Davis Studios is an artist development center located in Houston, TX for entertainment artists.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I came from an impoverished background and hailed from the small town of Charenton, LA. As an African American female, there were always specific challenges that I overcame to become a member of the bar and a multi-passionate business owner.
I have had to overcome medical challenges, lack of resources and seeking mentorship in a legal field which was primarily a white male dominated career field. My faith in Yah, has allowed me to be diligent in moving forward even when challenges arrive. Having a support system that is inspired by those who have overcome similar obstacles and circumstances has been pivotal in thriving in my entrepreneurial endeavors. My older brother who is the owner of Supertaters in Scott, Louisiana has been a key supporter throughout my career. My biological parents, Alvin and Janet Davis as well as my bonus parents, Marcelia and Albert Anderson have been key in encouraging me even in hard times. My family is a big part of my story and my drive to move forward and excel higher.
I would tell anyone that is experiencing a challenge to dig deep for your why and keep moving forward! It always gets better.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Employee/Professional I pride myself in having strong academics and a passion for helping others.
Prior to opening my legal practice, I worked for the legal department of BP America, and Judicial Intern for both Chief Bankruptcy Judge Jeff Bohm and Judge Kenneth Hoyt.
I was also selected for the Presidential Management Fellow Finalist Class of 2013. I earned my Juris Doctor, cum laude from Thurgood Marshall School of Law and my Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and English from Xavier University of Louisiana.
I am currently an entrepreneur at The S. Davis Law Group, PLLC. We offer stellar legal services in the areas of Business Law, Intellectual Property and Entertainment Law. My expertise and area of passion is in assisting small business owners with consultation, advice and development. I previously had a full service practice, but have recently moved to these practice areas mentioned.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The Covid-19 Crisis has impacted everyone to some degree.
What I have witnessed is creativity, determination and fortitude by so many individuals.
Life has changed and continues to change for many – seeing them find ways to continue growing and moving forward has been an interesting thing to watch and support.
We are resilient people. We navigate rough waters with grace and sophistication: it is to be applauded. The last lesson is to value each day with loved ones, colleagues, family, friends while you have it. Tomorrow is truly not promised. I personally lost over 25 family members to COVID.
