Today we’d like to introduce you to Shakundra Martin.
Shakundra, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started cosmetology in Longview TX in high school. Once I graduated I went to Austin TX to take my test. In the process of getting my license, I moved to Houston TX. After receiving my cosmetology license I started working at a salon doing hair on commission pay.
So fast forward to now, I’ve been in the hair industry for over 10 years now. I also have my own salon that I’ve been having a little over 5 years now. I’m also an educator for the national hair company CHI.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I had a few challenges throughout my career. I’ve worked a few different salon. Started at a salon in Sharpstown mall to part-time at ULTA salon to working at two other salons.
I was once an assistant to another stylist. I was on commission then went to booth rent to also being a manager at a salon of about 17 stylist and barbers. But I thank God for every experience cause it made me the strong professional hairstylist I am today.

My business Xclusive Touch Hair Studio is a professional and relaxing great experience. I specialize in clients natural hair. I style any type of textured hair. I do braids, locs, and a silk press. I’m also a colorist as well. I install extensions and apply relaxers also.
I style hair for weddings or any special events. I style women and men hair. So I can style anyone that comes through my salon doors. Coming to my salon you will receive the ultimate professional experience you can relax with a glass of wine and just focus on looking and feeling amazing when u walk out the door.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m looking to definitely expand in the future. So I’m looking forward to that. I’m going to continue to go to classes and stay educated and up to date on the new trends and styles. I’m going to continue to do what I can to keep my salon going and being successful.
To just be there for my clients and continue to make them look and feel even better.
