Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharimar Cruz
Hi SHARIMAR, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Sharimar Y. Cruz, and I’m a photographer originally from the culturally vibrant St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. I work under my brand name, Sycroix, and I’ve dedicated myself to exploring themes like cultural identity, geography, anatomy, and form through my photography.
I started my journey with a fascination for capturing moments, thanks to my parents—especially my dad, who always had a camera in hand, and my mom, whose support and encouragement have been instrumental in my journey as an artist. Those early memories ignited my love for the art of photography. In high school, I asked my dad for my first professional camera, marking the beginning of my career path. I later pursued a BFA in Photography at Point Park University and then an MPS in Fashion Photography from the School of Visual Arts, where I refined my skills and honed my vision.
Looking back, I see how everything has come full circle. My work today is inspired by my roots and the unique environment I grew up in. I’m still on this journey, constantly discovering new dimensions of my creative purpose and pushing my artistry forward.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Like any journey in a creative field, there have been challenges along the way. One of the biggest struggles has been navigating the balance between my personal artistic vision and the commercial demands of the industry, especially in fashion photography, where trends and client expectations can sometimes feel at odds with the more introspective themes I want to explore.
Additionally, coming from a small but culturally rich place like St. Croix has shaped my perspective in unique ways, but it has also posed challenges. Building a career in photography often meant having to establish myself in new cities, from studying in Pittsburgh to moving to New York for my master’s degree. Each move came with its own set of adjustments, from adapting to different environments to building new connections in the industry.
Reflecting on these experiences, I see how they’ve deepened my resilience and dedication to my craft. These struggles have ultimately helped me grow as an artist, pushing me to constantly evolve while staying true to my roots.
As you know, we’re big fans of Sycroix. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Currently, I’m in an exciting phase of rebranding and rebuilding my portfolio as I settle into Houston. My background is in fashion and cultural photography, and through my brand, Sycroix, I’m driven by themes of identity, geography, and form. I’m passionate about capturing these elements in innovative and visually striking ways. I aim to develop a creative agency and production house that will not only showcase my work but also create a collaborative space for artists and brands to bring their visions to life.
What sets my brand apart is a focus on storytelling that is both culturally rich and artistically driven. My work reflects a blend of my heritage, formal training, and a unique creative approach that goes beyond conventional photography. I’m dedicated to helping clients translate their identities and ideas into powerful visual narratives, with an eye for detail and a strong artistic foundation.
I’m especially proud of how my brand reflects my journey and my growth as an artist, and I’m eager to expand this into a broader platform where collaboration and creative exploration are at the core. I want readers to know that Sycroix is evolving into a space where fresh ideas can be explored, refined, and brought to life. Whether through visual campaigns, creative direction, or unique storytelling, I’m committed to crafting compelling narratives that resonate.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
As I build my new creative agency and expand my brand here in Houston, there are several ways people can work, collaborate, or support me:
Collaborate on Projects: I’m open to working with brands, creatives, and agencies who share a vision for impactful storytelling and innovative visual content. Whether it’s a fashion shoot, a brand campaign, or a collaborative project, I’m excited to connect with others to bring fresh, bold ideas to life.
Hire for Photography and Creative Direction: With my background in fashion photography and an eye for detail, I’m available for both commercial and personal projects. I offer services that include photography, creative direction, and conceptualization, all tailored to elevate and authentically represent my clients’ brands.
Support and Spread the Word: Supporting my journey is as simple as following my work, engaging with it on social media, and sharing it with others who might be looking for a creative partner. Every bit of encouragement, whether through comments, shares, or word-of-mouth, helps build my presence in Houston.
Join the Journey of My Creative Agency: As I build my agency, I’m also looking for people who might want to be part of this vision, whether as clients, team members, or collaborators. I’m excited to create a space where we can push boundaries, explore new concepts, and support one another in our creative goals.
