Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Sharita Warfield.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Warfield. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As a young girl growing up in a single-parent household in inner-city Detroit, I always knew I wanted to become a physician, ever since the 5th grade. I always had a love for science and a fascination with the human body. So I set upon my journey and I obtained my Bachelor of Science degree from Central State University, my Master’s degree from Tennessee State University, and my Doctorate of Medicine degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine. I completed my residency training in Emergency Medicine at Howard University in Washington D.C. I worked in the field of Emergency Medicine for 25 years and enjoyed every moment of it. After losing my mother to complications of diabetes and then being diagnosed myself, I decided to devote my career to educating the masses on the seriousness of diabetes.
I founded the Warfield Medical Group and Dr. SharitaMD with the hopes of raising awareness on the complications of poorly treated diabetes and how to improve one health and quality of life after being diagnosed with diabetes. After working so many years in the ER, I found that many patients didn’t know the proper lifestyle and dietary changes to make to manage their diabetes properly. So the overall mission and goal of WMG is to give people the tools that they need to improve their longevity and quality of life while decreasing the prevalence of various lifestyle-related diseases. I enjoy speaking, educating, and cooking and I utilize these gifts to affect the world in a positive way.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Becoming a physician is never smooth, at least it wasn’t for me. It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. I devoted 15 years of schooling and residency before becoming an Emergency Medicine Physician. There is test after test after test all along the way, some of which you may fail and have to take over. Not to mention life happens and there are ups and downs that interject in between. I remember being so worried that I wouldn’t get into medical school and when I finally got in, I was determined not to let anything stop me. During my 2nd year, I met my soon to be husband and became pregnant with our first child. I was devastated! I thought for sure this would put an end to my dream of becoming a doctor. However, I persevered and made it through, graduating on time with my class. Having a young child during residency training wasn’t easy either but difficult obstacles in life are the lessons that build character. So, smooth? No. Worth it? Yes.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Warfield Medical Group dba DrSharitaMD story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a Health, Wellness, and Lifestyle Medicine company. We focus on educating communities of color on the benefits of Lifestyle Medicine. Chronic diseases, which are often lifestyle based affect our communities at alarming rates, so we offer obesity and weight-loss counseling, personalized web-based dietary meal planning, lifestyle adjustment counseling, laser body contouring, yoni and body steaming, and other aesthetic procedures. We also have a vitamin and supplement line that will be launching soon. I am also an Amazon best-selling author of “Get Informed! A Guidebook for Recently Diagnosed Diabetics and Their Loved Ones”, a highly sought after speaker and a podcaster of a show entitled The Trim Den w/Dr. Sharita. I am most proud to be a black female-owned business using my gifts to impart positive change to our communities of color and our world as a whole.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I wouldn’t call it luck, I would say the blessings from God have allowed me to achieve my dreams and live out my purpose. When I was growing up, I used to say I wanted to be a wife, a mother, and a physician. Through his mercy, I have achieved all three.
