Thanks for sharing your story with us Shawn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The Christian CPA is the culmination of what I have been doing in my career and life for several years. In my career, I was a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and had experience doing audits, helping organizations with their accounting, and preparing tax returns. I was also a college professor with experience teaching accounting and personal finance. In my personal life I am a Christian and had been teaching Bible studies on personal finance and money matters. The Christian CPA is the result of these three aspects of my life and the experiences that I have gained from each area.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a new business always has some challenges. In my business, part of what I do is sell the book I wrote. Writing a book is a challenge, but selling a book is an even bigger challenge. Books have to be marketed and promoted constantly, and even then, there is no guarantee that it will sell. Book sales are easier at conferences where I am speaking at an event, but even there it can be a challenge. In addition, I am selling a book on personal finances for people that may be struggling with money issues, so the people that should buy my book might not even be able to afford the book. These are just some of the challenges that I face in my business.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Christian CPA – what should we know?
The Christian CPA is a business that helps people with their finances. We specialize in educational resources to help people manage their money. We provide financial conferences for organizations that focus on how to get out of debt, how to save for retirement, and how to invest in the stock market. We also provide resources for creating a budget, writing a will, and paying off credit cards. We are proud of the fact that we help people live better lives. When people are free from the burden of credit card debt, they will be happier. When they are able to save some money for emergencies, they have a greater sense of peace. And when they are able to see their investments grow, they are able to use their wealth to help others. The Christian CPA is different than other organizations because of our values. We value honesty, integrity, and trust in everything we do, and we try model that for both corporate accounting and personal finance.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The most essential quality for The Christian CPA is our values. Accounting is a field that involves trust. People entrust an accountant or financial manager to handle their finances with honesty and integrity. Unfortunately, not all accountants have acted ethically in the past. Large financial frauds have bankrupted billion-dollar companies in Houston and around the country. As a result, all CPAs now have to take an ethics course before taking the CPA exam. In addition, CPAs also have to take a continuing education course every two years to further instill the value of ethics. The bottom line is that the accounting profession sees that there is a great need for ethical accountants. The Christian CPA also recognizes this need, and therefore, we feel that our values are our most important ingredient for success.
