Today we’d like to introduce you to Shayla Martin.
Hi Shayla, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
How I got started?
As a young child I performed with my family, we sang, danced, and played instruments. At that time I didn’t know that I was forming a love for performing and creating a business idea all my own. Around the age of 13, I decided that I wanted to take dancing seriously. That’s when I became a student at Project Move Dance Studio. There I learned jazz, ballet, contemporary, and hip-hop. This is where my journey of performing, choreographing, instructing, and promoting dance started. I have performed at countless churches, events, and recitals. I have been on a company team, a majorette team, and a drill team. I also choreographed for artists for their videos all through my high school years. Around 2018, I entered the world of street dance and club culture/social dance culture.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Honestly, yes it has been a smooth road for me. I have always been supported in this area and I am thankful for that. I have never had any major injuries, past spraining an ankle. Having my son could have been an obstacle, but it was not because I had the support that I needed to thrive.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in helping people find themselves through movement.
I am known for my authentic style of dance, my strong presence, and my personality.
I am most proud that I have done everything that I have wanted to do in the dance world, including all-styles organizer for World of Dance, dance coordinator for Moodtomove and other parties In Houston, as well as being an integral part of B-Girl City. I am living my life as a full-time artist.
What sets me apart from others is my ability to connect on a deep level with artists. Doing so enables me to tailor choreography or services to the individuals involved based on their personalities, abilities, and vision.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is defined as setting goals and attaining them, starting back over with the same process over, and over again.
Setting a goal…dance in some of the most notable dance venues in Houston.
Attaining that goal… Dancing at the Wortham Center
Starting back over with the same process over and over… dancing at Discovery Green, The Hobby Center, The DeLuxe Theatre, The Miller Outdoor Theatre, and more.
