Today we’d like to introduce you to Shean Manickchan.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a registered nurse, real estate agent, investor, and entrepreneur. I was born on the exotic island of Dominica and raised on the beautiful island of St. Thomas. Never forgetting my roots, my family and I moved to Houston 21 years ago. At the age of 17, senior in high school, I was pregnant with my first son. Being pregnant at such a young age, I knew I would have to work twice as hard but it only motivated me to continue to reach my goal. I aspired to be a nurse, so I went to school and worked full time. At the early age of 20, my husband and I was approached by a real estate agent about buying a home. We were baffled at the idea of buying a home at our age and with the salary we made at the time, however, three months later we moved into our first home. This was the first step in building generational wealth for my family. Two years later, in 2005, I graduated from nursing school. My career as a nurse is very fulfilling. I learned how to deliver exceptional customer service, creating a culture where my patients and co-workers feel valued and cared for. In 2009, we bought another real estate property. In 2013, my desire to help others buy a home and build generational wealth intensified, so I became a real estate agent. Since obtaining my license, I have helped many first-time home buyers, sellers and investors with real estate purchases. I have also purchased multiple real estate properties and run a small business. Along the way, in 2019, I obtained a master’s degree in nursing leadership and master’s in business administration. This has led to opportunities for advancement in my nursing career while obtaining the skills to master my real estate career as well. I find joy in mentoring, inspiring and helping others reach their goals.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve had some struggles along the way, Being a teen mom, working and going to school full time was definitely a challenge. I remember my everyday hustle like it was yesterday. With the support of family and my husband, I was able to manage and graduate from nursing school. After becoming a real estate agent, I had to learn how to manage two careers while being a mother of two boys and a young wife. I wanted to build generational wealth for my family. I also wanted to give my clients the best service and guidance while purchasing the best long-term investments of their life. To be successful in both careers I had to shift to a growth mindset. I loved being a nurse and did not want to lose my passion, so I had to remember the “why” behind my motivation. I looked at every challenge and obstacle as an opportunity to improve and found reward in my client’s accomplishments. The ultimate goal is to help others succeed and improve outcomes in nursing care, so regardless of the obstacle I was up to the challenge.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a director of nursing, I lead and oversee a nursing department. My objective is to develop a collaborative and efficient working environment, focused on quality care while achieving the strategic goals of the organization. I maintain department budgets, set goals, communicate with patients, families and physicians and help cultivate a culture of excellence. In this role, I get to mentor, support and encourage other growing leaders in the organization. I am thankful for the opportunities given to me as a nurse and proud of my achievements so far.
As a real estate agent, I assist buyers, investors and sellers in achieving their real estate goals. I connect buyers and sellers in real estate transactions, coordinate appointments, negotiate contracts and utilize the best business strategies available to get my clients in the home that’s right for them. I educate and support my clients throughout the process. I am committed to service with an emphasis on professionalism, integrity and enthusiasm.
My knowledge in real estate has led me to invest in real estate as well. I own a few real estate properties in Houston and surrounding areas. I have focused on long term rental over the last 10 years but recently started a short-term rental business.
I am very proud of my ability to help and inspire others to grow professionally and build generation wealth by homeownership. What sets me apart from others is my passion for working with people and helping others succeed. I am a visionary and servant leader. Regardless of my role as a nurse or real estate agent, I empower my team and my clients to take action to achieve a clear goal.
